Do you Prefer to use Credit Card or Pay Cash

If you are a very disciplined person, you might choose to use credit card
instead of paying with cash on your spending and expenses. You will enjoy to accumulate points as you spend, you can join promotional contest too. But if
you can't manage your credit card payment well, then you will end up in trouble
with interest payment, late charges etc not forgetting over spending. Do share
about your credit spending experience...or your prefer to pay in CASH. Thanks!

Dear potofgold23,
Can I call your credit card 'the pot of gold too?'
Just joking..hahaha - looking at its endless benefits!
Yes, the person who got this idea of 'credit card' must be
very rich by now....It is so convenient and safer too, but must
manage well with the payment, if not it will have many
hidden charges here and there like :
interest charges, late payment charges etc.
You are excellence in credit card management, good...
All the best and do keep in touch!

I personally think that paying up front in cash is much better for your money, and overall of the majority of people, it will save you more money than any credit card deals. Let me give you an example.
Say you bought a T.V for $1000.
1. If you bought it with cash, you would have to go to your bank, or whatever means and withdraw that money and pay at the cash register. You would then see how much money it costs, and you will acknowledge that it has to be something worth it. Also, you don't have to pay any more fees ( except taxes )
2. You use your credit card because it is so convenient, with a limit of $5000 a month, you are not scared. You happily hand them your card and in no time you are just bought that brand new T.V and your credit card company has a 1% back guarantee, so you only spend $990! Ok, lets say you miss your payment on your tv, with interest rates of 20-25% you will actually be paying about $1200-1250 for the TV that only cost $1000 before, as you either just paid down the minimum or didn't pay at all!
3.But there`s another option that has the convince of a credit card and the security of cash!It is a debit card, which is the ideal way to pay! This is because you do not ever have to pay an interest fee, because you are just paying from your bank balance! It will as convenient so you have no excuse not to us it.
I hope this has helped some of you out with a preferable method, but paying in with cash in your hand is the ideal way.

Dear bluesinjid,
Thank you so much for taking your time to share
your views on payment mode and a descriptive
example on what will be the effects if default
the credit card payment(not paying on time)!
It will definitely cost more at the end and the
credit card user will suffer the burden of
interest charges.
Credit card has its benefits, but to optimize it (your
example of 1% back guarantee is great, we can save RM10)
we really need a systematic way to monitor. Pay on time
and pay in FULL! But many will overlook, that's the BIG
PROBLEM. Thanks a lot and really hope to hear from you
again in future discussion @ myLot. Have you response to
1) what you do with your loose coins?
2) Are you an Impulsive Buyer, influence by SALE, Offers..
It will be wonderful if you can share your opinions and
experience there which may be able to help other myLotters!
You can check from my profile under (discussion I started)
Thanks again and happy myLotting!

If we were living in an ideal world, credit-/debit-cards would be connected directly with your income. You wouldn't have to 'remember to pay' because it would be taken out of your pay directly.

Of course the credit card companies make money off you if you only carry a balance. I pay it all off when the bill comes in thus paying no interest. I also get a one percent credit that I can but groceries or buy a new car depending on which one I use. I doubt I will be buying a new car anytime soon, but you never know. I always need groceries however.
People are foolish to carry any balance as you get nothing for paying interest. That couch you cannot live without on sale is no bargain if it takes you years to pay off on credit as any savings will soon disappear in service and interest charges.
Credit is a skill like any other life skill and unfortunately does not seem to be taught in school.

Dear mariposaman,
Yes, I truly agree that new credit card users should be
advised on credit card & money management.
First and foremost, they should know that credit card is
NO FREE MONEY! There is hidden cost like late payment
charges, financial charges, subcription fees etc.
Paying minimum is NO GOOD at all! The interest charge on
the balance will accumulate fast, and without realising,
it will be big burden.. just like borrowing from "loan shark"
BUT if the person is very disciplined and know how to
tap and maximised the benefits of using credit cards,
there is actually a lot of advantages, go for
"Free for Life (no subscription fees) credit card, have
cash rebate / money back. etc, pay within the stipulated
payment due date, pay in FULL!
Thanks for sharing such an insight on credit cards, hope
to hear your views on other discussion too. There is one
current discussion that I am on now is "What do you do with
the loose coins", thanks for your participation and all the
best. Happy weekend!

I do not like to have a credit card balance on my cards at the end of a month. I would rather just spend the money that I know I have in my account. I use a debit card for my purchases, which is pretty much cash. I do not like to carry a whole lot of cash, in case my wallet/purse gets stolen. It is easier to use my debit card. Then that way I can track all my expenses with my online register. Credit cards can be bad news, because people see that they can use this money that they dont necessarily have. I also dont like the fact of interest on a balance. It is just like throwing the money away. I use my credit card for emergency purchases or only if I plan to pay off the entire balance before the end of the cycle. That is why there is such a problem with our country because they live on credit, and rely on the money that they dont have and are using of someone elses.

Dear nrn2003,
Many thanks for responding and you are most
welcome to discuss your views here!
I am pleased to hear that you are quite disciplined
with your credit card payment. You will settle it before
the due date and in full payment! Keep it up! Very Good!
This can avoid the late payment charges, interest charges
etc. Do not overspend.
I agreed with your last statement, many people are in
big trouble because they are spending on credit.

I have just one credit card, for emergencies which I might as well get rid off as I don't use it at all!
I use cash as far as possible. If the amount is large I use a debit card.At least the money that is spent is mine and I don't have to worry about it. Not to mention the fact that I know my limits.I don't like the idea of spending money that I do not already have.

Dear cbeee3,
Good morning and thanks for your views.
I truly acknowledge that spending on credit
card was actually spending on credit, spending
bank's money..Bank will charge us interest if we
did not settle the full payment, late payment
charges if we pay late...this is where all the
anxieties & the negative effects set in.
You are absolute good at personal money management,
you know your limits well, good !
Keep it up!
Anyway, it is good to have at least one credit card
for emergency purpose and for credit reference..BUT
try to get one with FREE SUBSCRIPTION FEES FOR LIFE! If
they charge the subscription fee, ask for waiver, if they
cannot, then you can say Good Bye to it! :)
IF we did spend on our credit card, we must monitor it,
pay in full and before due date to avoid unnecessary charges.
Many thanks & you are a qualified to handle money matters! lol

It is true, using credit cards is much convenient

But we must bear in mind, remember to pay the bill
in time and in Full to avoid paying late payment
charges, interest and financial fees. Try to get a

I notice the majority of responses seem to favour cash which is great, However, if you are buying something substantial, like an expensive new phone, or a laptop, it's a good idea to use a credit card. If you have cash you can always pay it out before any interest is due. The reason this is a good idea is that the gredit card company supports you if you have a problem with the quality if the product.

Hello, it depends on what I am buying. If it is something for around 20 dollars or less then I prefer using cash. The last thing I paid with a check/cash for was a car. It was something my b/f and I really needed since our last cars transmission was about to go out.But I seriously thought about putting the purchase on my credit card and I would have paid off the card the following month.

Thanks, we have been saving for emergencies and our car was about to stop running so I was looking for the same model and found one that was within our limit. We only got $400 for trade in and after all the taxes and transfer fees were calculated it took half of what was in the credit union I had saved.I really hope this newest car will last for about 5 years at least. My b/f and I were in a car accident January of last year and the first car was a lemon so we traded it for a 2001 Hyundai and that one lasted for a year. This newest car a 2005 has 100,000 miles less that the last hyundai we got. Getting a different car was the only thing other than replacing the transmission, which was an option but I thought why not get just get a newer model.

Hi ds6413, you are right..it depends on the amount we spend.
You bought a car using cash? That's great! We normally have to
take bank loan if the amount is large. I never knew we can pay
by credit card on purchasing car. You should pay by credit card
and earn the points since you are able to pay off the bill the
following month. Or you should bargain for lower price when you
paid in CASH...lol (because the merchant save on credit card
transaction charges)
Tks for sharing and Happy myLotting!

I always use credit card in purchasing an item. But I make sure that I have available funds to pay it come my due date. I usually transfer funds from my savings account to pay it. It this practice I avoid paying interest to the bank issuer of my credit card. Then come my annual fee due, I use my points to waive the annual fee. By using credit card, I avoided bringing too much cash whenever I go to the mall.

Thanks for your flattering words. I can also exchange my points for an item but my points are only enough to waive for my annual membership fee. After redemption, I am left with a very small points, not enough to exchange it with any items. lol. My bank issuer seldom waived my annual fee without the points. Hope this helps. Happy myloting.

Dear larish,
Give a pat on your shoulder for being a good
credit card user who managed your payment well
to avoid all the unnecessary charges like late
payment fees and the interest on unpaid portion!
Good job, keep it up!
Yes, it is much convenient and safer to use credit
card for big amount expenses than carrying much cash
with you. Btw, do you try to ask for waiver on credit
card subscription fees besides offset it using the
points that you have accumulated? Is the redemption
items / gifts attractive to you from your credit card?
Can is be cash rebate...whereby you can offset the amount
on your next statement bill? If have this features, it is
very attractive...
Tks and hope to hear from you again in my other topic of

Dear larish,
Tks for your prompt reply, really appreciate it.
I told my husband to focus on using one credit card only...by
doing this we can accumulate all the points into one card, easier
for redemption, more points will allow us better choices of items.
It also shows a better spending history, thus will have better
chance for credit limit upgrading...
Easier for payment too, we will just need to remember to pay one card
at a particular date..avoiding late payment charges if too many credit
cards, tendency to overlook the payment due date.
All the best and hope to hear from you more often! Cheers

I pay with either cash or check. With cash you watch the money leave your wallet...you know it is no longer yours and you know how much you have left. And with checks, I write it down in the book at the moment of payment, so I know how much I have left there as well.
I don't believe in credit cards because you are paying with money you simply don't have, and I don't see any reasons for it. It's more for "convenience..." but I've never been for convenience and instead focus on what is practical and the best thing for me. Debit cards are a little better in my eyes because you are using the money you do already have...but it's very easy to forget to write it down (ahem, my husband's problem) and therefore, you can get racked up with bank fees.
I hardly buy anything other than groceries and necessities anyway, but when I buy anything I want to know how much I'm spending and how much that leaves me with.

My husband and I don't have any debt (although he used to have problems with his debit card), and all the money I could spend on materialistic things I put into my retirement account. At 20 years old, I know I won't be seeing that money for awhile, but it is really going to be worth it once I retire! :)

i prefer to use cash. the reason why i don't get a credit card is because it's easy to be out of control with it. if you have the means and you see something you like, then you want to have it. so in order for me to live only within my means, i don't use a credit card. credit is good when you go shopping but when you start paying your debts, there's really nothing good about it.

If you have cash in your hand much better to pay in cash than paying credit card. If you are not good in spending money wisely, use cash because if you are using credit card, you can not control sometimes the expenditure and before you know it you have enough to pay or you may exceed to your credit limit and it is a problem in the future. If there is promo it could be wise to use credit card, after all the points you may collect will be accumulated.

Penalty are much higher and you are oblige to pay for that. Just in your penalty sometimes you may find it hard to pay. If you are capable enough to have credit card go on, but if you are not stay with cash....

Dear jonjee,
It is wise to channel all your credit card expenses
into one credit card which you think offers the best
benefits to its users. By doing this, you save the
trouble of overlooking the payment due date which
normally occurs when you use too many credit cards!
Once you overlook payment due date, you will end up
peying late charges, overdue interest rate etc.
Moreover, by focus on one card, your spending volume
will be higher, looking at your spending pattern,
chances are you will likely to get credit limit upgrade
by the card issuer. With more points accumulated in one
card, you will have more choices for redemptions...
Tks for sharing and hope this comments will enlighten you!

I read in a magazine that females can attend to more things at a time than man. That might explains why men are mostly target oriented while females care also about corelated factors. Very often, my husband fulfils only half of the things I asked him for, unless listed on paper. Otherwise, he would tell me I did not tell him in the first place. Have you met similar cases?

Little does she knows she has to pay a high interest on

I don't understand the concept of others. "You get rewarded for spending money on expenses." It's black and white for me enough to see that these banks wants people to use their credit cards because in the end, money would come their way. That also is very clear for me to see that people, who uses those credit cards, would lose money on things they may not really need just to earn some points on some bank. I don't see the wisdom in such a logic.
Why would you allow yourself to increase your expenses just for mere points when one can just pay for it outright and prevent oneself from gaining unwanted debts? Unless if what you're paying for can become an asset sometime sooner or later...
I don't have credit cards. I use only debit cards. But if I will get a credit card, I will not use it than if I have to buy myself an asset, it could be land or a business, depending on the circumstances.

I am very well aware of the consequences of spending via credit cards. I see everyday how my mom gets stressed and worrying about how to pay her bills. She's knee deep in debt but it seems that she still can't help but continue going more deep. It's depressing really, but it's this circumstance that is driving me to be very strict with my currency and expenses. I want to help her out with it but my hands are still tied.
