Stand in front the door without key

It's embarrassing to say this, some days ago, I was planning to buy something outside, it's about 7 P.M and rain outside, I took my umbrella and then locked the door, I live in the 6th floor, then I went downstairs. When I approached the gate, I found I didn't take my key with me. Oh, my god, in that moment I realized that I was in the middle of two locks.
Then I checked my pocket, there is nothing except 20 Yuan(about $3). I didn't take cellphone because of low battery, so I even can't ask my colleague or friend for help. What a bad situation! Then fortunately a neighbor(we live in the same building) wants to go out, I followed him.
After getting out, I asked my landlord for help, then opened my room.
After that accident, I get a routine, check if the door key is in my pocket or not before going out.
Do you have the same experience? What will you do to prevent this if you hadn't experienced?
Happy to know your attitudes, happy mylotting.

It happened to me that i locked the door, returned the bottles of soft drinks in the store, then when i am about to open the door to enter, i have no key with me. I checked too but i found nothing and i do remember that i put the key on the table but forgot to picked it up when i am about to go out.
I am still lucky because the duplicate key was just few walks away from the office i am living and serves as my home here.
Its embarrassing because of forgetfulness, now i make the key as necklace to ensure it is with me anytime.

It's a good idea, I will take it in consideration. But if we got a lot of keys on my neck, it will be definitely inconvenient. I think it's a good idea for people only have one key, they can treat it like a decoration hanging on the neck.
Have a joyful day, Glesil_oo.

It is comfortable for me to make it as necklace because it is one key for the main door, and another one for the door.
Alright, having many keys is not good idea that you will make it as necklace, i see your point in that, thank you you notice it.
If you have many keys, there is key holder and the good idea is attached it in your jeans or make it as a belt.

This has never happened to me but often have thought about if this happened what I would do. Fortunately I have got into a mental routine of basically triple checking that whenever I go out I have my keys in my pocket and usually my mobile phone. My last check is always when I am just about to leave and check my keys are in my pocket yet again. Don't know how I got into this routine but I have once got to the door about to leave and realised that I had left my keys on my desk, so I'm glad I have.

We are twenty in our house and there would be no problem even I don't hand the keys. We are always not going outside at the same time 'coz we have a different schedules. The entrance door is always open during day time and if it's already locked I could call somebody inside to open the door.
