Is it inappropriate?

I'll be having a baby girl in three months, and my shower will be taking place soon. Because I've received quite a bit already from friends through hand-me-downs, there is actually quite little I need to put on my registry. On the invitations, would it be inappriopriate to ask people if they'd like to, instead of shopping off my registry list, they can make a monetary donation to my tuition fund, as I will also be continuing school after having the baby? Money is tight these days... as everyone knows. But I can't drop out of my classes as I'll make more money when I obtain my degree, and I have plenty of family members around to care for the baby during my on-campus class (the rest of my classes are online so I can stay home). Is this a good idea? Or will it blow up in my face? Any ideas or feedback is appreciated.
