What do you think about a rehoming fee for kittens if it is for a good cause?

Angel - Angel sitting waaaaaaay up in the window above the shower in our bathroom. And she was pregnant at the time. I don't know why she was up there, but she carefully slid down the wall on her front paws to get down.

This past winter, our neighbors 2 houses down moved. They claim they could only catch 2 of their 4 mainly outdoor cats. Once the weather turned really cold, the 2 remaining cats decided that they lived in our house & would run in whenever our door was open. There was a female which I call Angel & her son who is about a year old that I named Baby Black. Soon after, we discovered that Angel was pregnant. She had 5 adorable kittens on St Patrick's day. I found homes for all of the kittens. We also tried to find a home for Angel & Baby Black since we already have 2 (3 at the time) dogs & a cat. We contacted several shelters & they were all full. I guess people only wanted cuddly little kittens. We talked about getting Angel spayed, but since I'm the only one in the household working & even that is only 3 days a week, we just didn't have the extra money. Now Angel is pregnant again. I have kicked around the idea of charging a $15-20 rehoming fee per kitten. The fee will go towards having Angel spayed & I'm going to strongly encourage people to bring me a money order made out to my vet. We found a pet rescue organization that will help with the cost of the spaying, but we still have to pay some, plus her shots & that is $70. I'm not looking to make any money here, I just want to keep Angel from having more kittens. This will be her third litter in about 16 months.

I think that if you are adopting from a shelter then yes a rehoming fee is a good thing to have, for shots, spay and neuter and to help fund the shelter in which your new family memeber has come from. We got a little kitten and her rehoming fee was $10 but she didn't come from a shelter. a lot of people that are looking for a new home for their pets ask for a rehomingfee to ensure that their beloved pet goes to a good home, it's hard to know if the home they are going to will be a good one or not. I personally prefer to adopt pets that are in shelters because I believe that every pet derserves a second chance on life. but that's my own personal opinion.

Great idea especially since you are being honest to the people getting the kittens, i'm sure this if anything will make them want to buy them even more. also you are helping to lower the amount of babies that will be produced by the mother because the main problem unfortunately there is an over population problem with dogs and cats in this country. so good luck i do think it is wonderful and i'm glad you have gone to such lengths with these cats and her babies.

I think it's a great idea. Money to help stop the need to find homes for new baby pets, when there are older ones in the world who still need homes is a wonderful idea. While it's true that people will always want kittens, it's also true that people will always support spaying and neutering of pets. I like your idea.
