I was allowed to have a fun when I was nine years old. It was only for emergencies, but when I turned 10 I got to use my phone as I wanted. I think nine is a good age for kids to have phones, but I have heard of five year olds having funs. So what age do you think would be proper for someone to have a phone for the fist time?

Children should not be given cell phones till the time they are into college, because of cell phones they tend to e constantly busy on there new handsets and rather they should be busy in something else than the cellphones.

Wow you make your kids wait all the way until college to get a cellphone? I thought the response about waiting until they were eighteen was a little over the top. Cellphones can also be helpful. They have built in calenders, alarms, and calculators which might come in handy for homework or after school events, so cellphones I believe, shouldn't have to wait until your all the way in college.

What is the point of using the calendars, notes functionality of the cell phones when they can remember the same in there brains, it will always help them to be iindependent of devices and make an attempt to remember all these items all by using there brains... They are not so much into meetings and appointments that they need all these functions of a cell phone.

I didn't get a cellphone until I was in college. I don't see a problem with highschoolers getting phones as long as they keep them put away during school. I think cellphones can be very beneficial so parents are able to get in contact with their kids if they need to.

I wouldn't give a cell phone to any child that has not reached their teen years. What the heck do they need a mobile phone for, anyways? Shouldn't all parents be keeping track of their kids when they are young? Seems silly to me. If they want to talk to their school chums they can do that at home

While those things may happen, they aren't that common. besides, how do people now think we survived all those years when there was no mobile phones?

Yes I understand what you are saying, but what if there is an emergency? Like them getting kidnapped or if they were heading back from a friends house and the car broke down, and they had no way of reaching you.

I got my youngest a phone when he was 12, not for fun but for emergencies because I would either be working late or he would be with his dad and always wanted to come home and if his dad got mad at him, he wouldn't let my son use "his" phone to call. I didn't have a home (land line) phone at the house and just thought it was better that he have his own phone.

I think that's a very good idea to give a cellphone to a kid that age if he doesn't have a phone at home to get in touch with you.

I have an online shop, and this Mom bought her kid a cellphone from me...and she just turned 5. The phone is touch screen...for me its kinda complicated for a kid to handle, but heck, kids these days they really know what to do with gadgets! lol. I think for me, 11 yrs old would be the right time for a kid to have a phone.

Well a sell is a sell no matter how old they are.lol. She probably wanted to get it because that's what all the "big kids" think is cool, and I must admit if I had the money to get a touch screen cellphone I would get one too. Kids today know everything about electronics, the probably could school some of the older generation on it.

I got my first cell phone when I was 21. It was one my mother had already used, and, after she got another one, she gave that one to me. Of course, I had to be responsible for maintaining it. It wasn't a very good phone, so I hardly used it. To this day, I rarely use my cell phone. I think a young person should be able to hold a part-time job and show some responsibility in order to have a cell phone. I think some kids today think cell phones are a right, not a privilege, so they frivolously use their cell phones without having to pay for plans or phone cards.

Wow 21? That's a very old age to me to be the first time getting a cellphone. I also think some kids out there are beginning to think that cellphones are a right not a privelidge. I think we should set boundaries for the kids like, after homework you can get one hour of cellphone use, or if you go on the cellphone today no computer today.

How about a rule like "don't use the phone unless you really have to" or "only in emergencies". Cellphones are not toys and shouldn't be treated as such.

I think kids should oni be allowed to use cellphones once they are old enough to purchase it themselves! Kids are exposed to cellphones too early these days and I think that is not too good for health.

I like your thinking. I think it would be a great bargaining chip if a kid wanted a cellphone. If they are able to save money to buy their own cellphone and pay any over limit charges on minutes or texts, they they should be able to have a phone.

I was 16 when I first got a cell phone, but then it was one of those bag phones that had to stay in your car. My kids will probably be somewhere around that age, give or take depending on how responsible they are then. No kid really needs a cell phone at 5, although my 4-year-old has a few, but only because they're our cast offs. They don't do anything. She thinks she's talking to someone, particularly her grandma.

We got our older daughter a phone when she was 11. We were going to wait until she was 12, but my husband (oops) dropped his phone in the pool and we had to go in and get him a replacement anyway. She's going to be taking the bus home starting next month, so we want her to be able to call if she runs into a problem.

Well I guess she got lucky!lol. Yes that is a good idea to give her a cellphone now scince she has to ride the best instead of driving home with you. A lot of accidents can happen on the bus.

I got my first cell phone when I got into middle school, so I was in the 6th grade, so I was around 11 or 12 years old. And I actually agree that this is a good age for kids to get cell phones. I think this because kids will be going into middle school, wanting to meet a lot new kids, and doing more activities. And what better way for the parents to keep track of their children, at an age were their becoming more independent.

Yes I agree with you. You need to let kids be more independent in there closer to preteen years. If you over protective to much and too often, then their bound to rebel against you, and do worse things then just giving them the cellphone.

i think kids should get cell phones at age 13 or 14. i say 13 because it will mean alot for there birthday. and 13 means you just became a pre-teen. really awesome, i got my first phone when i was 14. and then that only lasted about 3 months i think or less it was pre-paid and the minutes got expired. and no 9 is a horrible age for a kid to have a cell phone. you got lucky and got yourse at 10. but alot of 9 year olds aren't that responsible. its just way too young. but we can agree to disagree i guess.

I was not allowed to have cell phones until 16.Not the matter of strict from my parents, i was not exposed to use cell phones, till 16 I did not know the use of cell phones.I think the age to start is 10 for kids.Happy mylotting!!

Wow you weren't exposed to cellphones until you were 16 years of age. That's pretty late to have first learned how to use a cellphone in my opinion. I too think that 10 years old is a reasonable age for kids to get their first cellphones. I think by that age they are beginning to get mature and responsible enough to handle a cellphone.

my brother has been asking me to buy him a mobile since he was 10 years old, but when he graduated elementary, that's the time that I gave him one, but not that expensive unit. Because nowadays communication is important, so how can we reached him if he can't be communicated?

Yes that is a good point. What if there is an emergency then if he had to cell phone you would have no possible way of reaching him. Then it might be to late. There are good and bad things that will come with a cellphone, but hopefully it will be all good if you teach the kid will.

I don't think kids should have cell phones at all. I got along fine without one and did not get a cell until I was in my twenties. Kids do not need a phone. They should be playing and interacting with people not texting!

Cellphones are not just for texting or calling you know. There are many other tools like calenders, alarms, games, and many other features. They can interact with people on the cellphones, and they can set up things that they can do like parties on their cellphones by texting or calling the people they want to hang out with.

mmm well ... i think as long as they understand how and when to use it, they may have one, in case of urgent things happen but i think in 8 years old may have one

Wow how I wish I were your kids.lol. 8 years old you would give your kid a phone to use however they please? That's a little to young for me, but if it's just for emergencies maybe, but only if they go somewhere else on the weekends, or they have activities on some days of they week, but that's pretty much it.

Just depend on what your wana do with your kid's cellphone. As we all know, secoity not safe like before, you should always keep one eye on your kid, when the kids go out or go to school, it's better to put one cellphone in their bag, So you can know what happened with you kid on time. I think if like that, you should let your kids get cellphone at 6.

Wow that's very interesting. As long as they don't try to play with it while there at school or show it off, because it could just as easily get stolen from someone in their class who doesn't have a cellphone.

Why do you say 14 is a good age when you got your first phone at 13? Do you think you were not responsible at that age?
