Is it Safe to use Facebook Today?

I have been using only orkut for social networking in the internet. Now after hearing about various negative incidents about orkut, I deleted my profile. What I heard about orkut was that terrorists from Pakistan and Afghanistan would use our profile to find area info and also to recruit more people to their organization. Now I have made a facebook a/c and I want to know whether facebook is really safe? Or is it also like orkut? Orkut is banned in many countries in the world, but facebook isn't. DOes this mean facebook is safe? Please let me know!
