is having video on my sites really effective?

I'm just a newbie in doing some internet stuff as other income. I notice that a lot of ads I'm seeing now doesn't use much videos as explanation of their offers. But i read somewhere that having one will effectively help me boost my need in earning. Friends please share your opinion about this. I find sites that have videos on it makes the surfing slower but I'm also thinking of maybe ill loose more of interest of possible viewers. I'm afraid because I'm not so good in writing i might not create such attractive sites aside from the graphics i know few.
