I am planning a family vacation. This vacation will happen between September 30, 2009 and May 1, 2010. We are going to FLORIDA. That is all I am sure of at this point.
I plan to fly into TAMPA, stay 2 days and go to Busch Gardens.
Then we will drive to Kissimmee and stay 3 days.
During those 3 days we will go to Sea World and the Magic Kingdom and MGM.
Then we will drive over to Cocoa Beach and spend 1 night before we head back to Tampa to fly back home.
I am a realist and have a family of 4 children, ages 13, 8, 7, and 3. I know that I can't plan a whole week where everyone is going to be happy the whole time so I am forced to cram 3 vacations into one week.
I want to hear from people who have traveled to Florida or who live near these attractions. I want to know your opinion on when I should go and if you think what I have planned is a good idea.

I was born and raised in Florida. I was told by someone that works in the theme parks that September/October is the best time to travel to the parks. Kids are back in school so vacationers generally are out of town. Usually that time of year is still pretty warm too. The snowbirds havent nested back in the area that early in the year either. Not to far from Cocoa beach is Kennedy Space Center. I dont know if the kids would like it or not but they have some neat stuff there. Im including there website if you want to take a look. Cocoa Beach is not all that great. I would recommend clearwater personally, it is close to Tampa. Sea World is always a blast and they have a new water park next door now too. If anyones birthday is in that time disney is letting visitors in for free on their birthday which could save you $75, if money is an issue. If you have any more questions just let me know. Hope this helps. I live about an hour away from the attractions now but still frequent them.

Cocoa Beach really is just an afterthought because my 3 year old girl LOVES the beach but isn't able to go with us to Assateague so we are doing it for her and there is supposed to be a Manatee Santuary Park at Cocoa Beach.
That is why we are only going there one day. Is there anything special about Clearwater or just a personal preference of yours? Is the water still warm enough in October to swim in the ocean?
My boys (ages 7 & 8) would love the Space Center but there is no way I could get my girls (ages 3 & 13) to suffer through it.
We are doing Busch Gardens for the oldest, Magic Kingdom for the youngest, MGM for the boys and Sea World should have something everyone should enjoy.
It is sick that the disney tickets are costing me as much as my plane tickets but unfortunately every will have had their birthday this year before October but thanks for the help.

I prefer cocoa beach. It will actually be closer to Disney. I live on the east coast in Port St. John. We are about five or ten min. away from the space center and half an from the beach and Disney. Cocoa Beach has free parking and even a little nature walk next to where you enter the beach. The lot is I dream of Jeanie. You can wash off before getting back into your vehicle. With the age ranges, you might like Kennedy Space Center it really depends on what your family likes. If any of them are into astrology or space travel I definitely suggest going. There is also Brevard Zoo in Viera, which the younger kids will love. Sept and October sound like a good plan. Halloween is usually cool so bring a light jacket. Oh, and contrary to what people say, FL does get cold. There is usually three weeks between Dec. and Jan. Nights go into the 30's and days are in 40's or 50's. It just doesn't snow! I've lived in central Florida on the east coast for 11 years. Snow fell once the year my daughter was born in 2002. It didn't stick. It melted as soon as it landed. It was beautiful though.

Well as we all know Florida is very hot. Since i live here in Florida and only an hour away from Orlando were Disney World is located i would have to say there are plenty of months to go, but don't go during the summer as it is so hot and your on concrete asphalt all day that gets burning hot to even touch. I would say your best time to go would be March and April as it isn't raining much then and even October and November would be good as it isn't so hot and not cold out yet. I hope i was able to help you out as i am a local Floridian residence and go to disney world quit often.

I'm seriously considering the first week of October. I just don't want to get caught in hurricane winds or rain.

Hurricanes are usually kind of predictable. Most of the time you can pretty much know there coming weeks in advance.

Don't joke, or you might find yourself with a plane ticket to FL. My dad can't take the time off of work, my mother would be more work then she is help, and my mother-in-law can't leave her husband that long.
If we had just one more adult with us so we weren't outnumbered by kids this would be perfect. That way when the baby wanted to stay in Land of the Dragons someone could stay with her and when my oldest son wanted to ride some god awful roller coaster an adult could go with him, etc. etc. etc.
My husband and I are going to need to go on vacation after this vacation is over.

we went in january one year and there were no lines at disney and we got off a ride and went right back on it if we wanted to. it was not too hot and we actually needed a lightweight windbreaker while on the outdoor rides but it was heaven if you ask me. i do not like really hot and humid weather so it was the best for me. i have also been at disney world in august and november. august was way too crowded and way too hot for me and november was really nice. the weather was in the 70's and it was not overly crowded.

Everyone seems to agree about November. I already have 10 days in Jamaica planned this November so that's out for this year. My youngest wants to go in October. My boys want to go for Easter (I think lines and crowds) and my oldest wants to go at the end of April for her Birthday.
My husband and I don't want to go at all so we were told our votes don't count. lol

When I was growing up, as well as when my son was growing up, we always found the best time to go was in November, before Thanksgiving. In fact during the week just before Thanksgiving, there were hardly any lines at any of the major theme parks. It was terrific to spend less time waiting in line and more time 'doing'. We always booked hotels while we were there, and with the slowness we saved 50 to 75% on rates even staying on the beach. Independantly owned motels/hotels had better discounts that the chains.
Do you have any friends or family living in Florida, who may be AAA members? November used to be 'Florida Appreciation Month'. Check with them to see if it still is, having them prepurchase theme park tickets at their local AAA location will save you enough to be able to buy more souvenirs. If you mail your souvenirs back to yourself, you'll save a lot of headaches at the airport.
You'll have a great time! Your children are the perfect ages! My only suggestion is to consider Universal Studios instead of MGM. My son liked it better when he was younger...but liked MGM better when he got older. See? Gives you a reason to go back in a few years!

I don't want to go this year, please don't give me a reason to go back. lol
I've always hated Mickey Mouse and the fact that 2 days in Disney Parks costs more than the round trip flight there doesn't make me feel any better towards the frickin rat.
It would be even more expensive to only do 1 day at Magic Kingdom then 1 day at Universal. So they are stuck with MGM if they want that sort of theme park at all. If it were up to me I would go to Animal Kingdom but I should see my share of animals at Busch Gardens. So we got 2 days at Disney and the kids vote picks the park.
My brother lives near Clearwater but he is in the military so he gets his military discount as well as being a Florida resident discount so he doesn't have a reason to be a AAA member. But thanks for the idea.
I won't be able to go the week before Thanksgiving because we aren't getting back from Jamaica until the 18th but that would be an awesome vacation. Jamaica to Disney...lol
*sigh* if only we were rich and the kids didn't have school.

Florida has so many great things to do. If you want to limit theme parks, let the kids pick one, and of course Busch Gardens for the animals (Busch Gardens is so good that it's easy to spend a couple of days there). There are lots of smaller parks that are fun, educational and cheaper...no matter where you go. If Disney makes you want to bring glue traps...then skip it. There's plenty to do there without spending an arm and a leg.

I do not know the answer to this question, because I have never set foot in the state of Florida, but my husband used to live down there, my step-son was born down there, and we have a load of friends down there in Florida, so he should be able to come up with a decent answer for you as soon as he finds this discussion.

About the beach idea - the Gulf stays considerably warmer than the Atlantic. Plus, with the kids the age they are, you should also consider the waves. On the Atlantic side the waves will easily knock kids over and an adult would have to be right there in the water next to them the entire time. In the Gulf, there's waves, but they wouldn't knock a toddler over. :) But if that's not a concern and were interested in the Manatee viewing, there are plenty of places to do that around here. I think the best area with the most manatee options is the Crystal River area. I personally love the glass bottom boat tours there. Imangine the kids delight as they can look through the bottom of the boat into the crystal clear spring water and see all the manatees and fish. The boat drivers also feed them so they come around the boat.
Regarding the attractions. Stop and think for a moment. It all depends upon what type of weather you want to walk around in all day long... Even during our coldest time of year, if it dips below freezing for 3 days, it's alot! Christmas time last year we were all walking around in short sweating! My kids spend the day in the pool... If the heat/humidity is not a factor, then my suggestion would be in mid-September right after all the schools are back in session. If you prefer to walk around and not have sweat dripping off of you and everyone cranky from the high heat/humidity, then I would suggest early to mid February.
Another tip. Considering you are looking to be busy at the parks all day rather than the hotels, it is NOT worth it to stay at the theme park hotels as you will not be using any of the extras you'd be paying for (ie: water parks at the pools, roaming characters, ect). Just stay at a local hotel that you find for cheap. Yes, you will probably have to drive to the park instead of taking the shuttle, but you could also leave the park in the afternoon for lunch at Mc D's or Burger King rather than spend $8.50 for a single hot dog inside the park...
When we go to the parks (we get the year passes for a different park each year), I freeze some drinks and bring them in a cooler for when we leave the park at the end of the day. They're still very cold and keep the kids tided over until we get home. I also stop on the way to the park and go through a fast food drive through for breakfast or I bring pop tarts and/or dry cereal as most of the time, they are still mostly asleep when they are getting dressed and out the door. This allows them a few more minutes to sleep and I don't get to stressed rushing them while they're still not even awake yet.
Hope this helps. I've lived in the Tampa Bay and Orlando areas for over 20 years now... :)

You have just become my new best friend! lol
I looked into DeSoto state park (i think thats what it is called) that has beaches on Tampa Bay and the Gulf Coast. Do you have an opinion or knowledge on those areas?
We aren't staying inside any parks. All of our hotels are little local places of economy places like Days Inn. I am just there to shower and sleep, I don't need to pay $100 a night for that.
I don't want high heat/humidity. So FL from June-August is certainly out but I also don't want to wait in lines for hours to ride rides. (so now Thanksgiving or Christmas breaks are out too) Does FL have a rainy season, or does that coincide with Hurricane Season?
I think I have this narrowed down to The first week of October or the first week of November or the last week of March or the last week of April.
If you come back please rate these times from best to worst. Thanks so much for your comment!
