i disagree to using laptop without battery, once the power is off suddenly, laptop is closed immediately, it can damage laptop, exceed the harm of battery.the bad thing happened two times, i am so worry about the safety of my laptop.
i don't care how long charging battery, use my Acer laptop with battery involuntarily for 4 years, the battery still works for one and half a hour, mine also is 15 inch, big inch laptop expends the electricity of battery quickly.if you choose smaller inch laptop, batter can work more lasting.

Yes, you are right. But think about the desktop. It is the same situation. Most of people won't have UPS, but we are still using it no problems. And blackout seldom occurs. Think about it, if you carry out your laptop for use, 15 mins using time is fairly not enough.
Base on how and what purpose of use, you can make the best decision.

From time to time, drain the battery until its empty. Meaning you turn on your computer without connecting the power supply and leave it until the battery runs out. From there charge your battery and make sure you disconnect the power supply when the battery is full. Usually connecting the power supply when the battery is full will eventually damage your laptop battery. I usually remove my laptop battery when the power supply is connected and the battery is full already. I have observed that by doing this, my battery has longer life. The power of my batter also last quite long after doing such. From what I understand the battery usually keeps a memory and when you charge it all the time even when it still has power, it will eventually lead to shorter life. So it would be good to drain them and charge them fully from time to time rather than charge them all the time even when they still have some power left.

My laptop battery life shortened also when I compare it to it's original life. I am so conscious on this thing before but not anymore since I would just plug it in when I use it.
I some other times, it is not about the battery but the processes done by laptop which make the battery life short. Running many applications (that includes applications that run in the background) at a time consumes the battery charge faster. Another factors are the use of USB ports that also use electricity.
These are the things I consider when working on my laptop unplugged.
But then again I'm not seeing it as a problem anymore since I work with my laptop plugged.

Okay, there are several ways to increase the battery life. First of all, try to keep your laptop off charging for maximum time possible. Continuous charging after 100% available battery would harm the battery.
Secondly, decrease the brightness as it consumes more power.

Nowadays, most of electronic machines use alkaline battery. But rechargable doesn't mean you are charging with no harm. Actually it is only one-time use, you are charging the new space of the battery. So when you use the battery more and more, you are killing it. To keep your battery healthy, you have to:
-Use power plug when available.
-Use less battery if possible
----AND----
-Do not over-charge the battery.
-Do not keep charging the battery when you are using the laptop.

I think there is misconception about rechargeable batteries. Rechargeable batteries have re-charge discharge life. Its performance deteriorates faster if you re-charge them often. that means the more you exhaust your battery the more you will recharge them
Battery chargers right now are sophisticated that it stop charging when battery is full, which means overcharging is out of the issue.
I would suggest then that as long as there is available AC source around, use it. That way you are not using the battery. recharge cycle is minimized.

Which means when you are using with the power plug in, take out the battery.
You don't know how becuase you have never think and do in this way. This is harmful if you have used your computer for a long time.
I guarantee you will have a longer battery life :)
