I finished reading a book by Donald Trump, Think like a Champion. This book is more like a collection of reflections in which Donald Trump shared his thoughts with us. In one of the article, he mentioned that "I'm a pragmatic positive thinker. When I hear people saying that anything you want to do is possible, that seems childish or at least uninformed to me. Some things are not gong to happen." Donald Trump gave some examples, such as he's not going to win gold in Olympics, no matter how positive he is. And he concluded that particular paragraph with "Be positive, but be realistic." Do you think we can be positive and realistic at the same time? How do you think we can apply the principle of "be positive, but be realistic" in our life?

hi there, i think not everyone can be practical and positive at the same time.....but that makes a perfect combination. if one knows to be optimistic and yet realise the limits, they will not have to be disappointed. have a nice day.

Hi Uniquestar, if only everyone can be practical and positive, there will be much more rich persons on Earth. Many of the rich guys who started out poor are practical and very positive, that's why they deserve to be rich. Coming from Donald Trump, that's a really billion dollars advice.

I think when you're told you can do anything you're hearing a lie. Of course you can't accomplish anything you want! We all have limitations and saying we can do anything sets us up for failure. I agree with Mr. Trump. We have to be realistic, assess our abilities and decide what is possible. I'm an optimist, I think that everything is for a reason and you can turn any negative into a positive--it may not negate the negative but it can make it better and you can learn from it. If it's raining, that's a positive thing for the plants and gives you a chance to get something done inside or just relax. If you lose your job as I did, there's a better one waiting for you--you might have to have a few that you don't like on the way to that better one (or none at all) but it all works out for the best.

Hi Dragon54u, I like your practicality and the positive outlook in life. I hope you will read the books written by Donald Trump, after all, he's an American Icon, and a billionaire who is willing to share his thoughts with us. I have learnt a lot, and learn to see things from a greater perspective. He says say look at the big picture. It's great to learn to adapt to the environment, maybe someone should write an article about cockroaches, since they are one of the oldest surviving creatures, and still haunting us today.

Definitely Scheng. I believe one needs to be positive but realistic in life.Being positive is not to lose hope and only think of the positive aspects and outcome and effects of an action[ whatever the outcome be]; being realistic is to tone your positive expectations to your potential. Now for example, I would have a limitation in capacity.I should only try to achieve the maximum potential I can and not look at others and sigh out of jealousy.ThIS DOES NOT excuse me or prevent me from making my best efforts or strtching myself to the maximum. But ,as that person pointed out I canot learn Calculus today or learn swimming and win a tournament or get one lakh page views in AC or earn thousands of dollars there. This is being realistic. I have to make all effots possible to achieve my dreams with the hope that they would come true..I have to identify my strengths and base my efforts on these , so that I can achieve the best possible result after making hundred percent efforts in a proper focused direction. This is being positive and optimistic .

Hi Kalav, when you use "this person" to describe Donald Trump, I have a feeling that you do not know who he is. I think you can find a lot of information in the Internet. He's a billionaire, and to use his name in any building or any project, the developers will have to pay him a million dollars, because his name, Trump, is associated with quality in property. I have read some of his books. Glad to see that at least one billionaire is writing books. Hope more billionaires can write books, and share their thoughts with us.

I didn't know Donald Trump had any depth to him at all until he saved Ed McMahon's home. I believe in being positive and realistic. Sometimes when you are realistic you don't seem positive. Good example in my own life: My son is supposed to go to kindergarten next year. His autism is so bad there is no way he will go to kindergarten. I hope he makes it to first grade the following year. Those statements are positive. It's what is going to happen but I hope it changes. You never know what is going to happen until it happens so there is no reason to be negative. On the flip I guess you can say there is no reason to be positive but you might as well be accepting.

Wow Mommaj, this guy is a billionaire and you dont know he got any "depth"! You deserve a good spanking right in the middle of New York! How can anyone wihout depth to him manages to become a billionaire in New York city? He has written a number of books, and I have read a few. They are very strongly worded and very blunt, but contained very good advice. It's great to read from rich guys' perspective and to learn how they view things. Wonder how many billionaire writers are there? Most billionaires write about their success stories, but not as prolific as Donald Trump.

Hi Mommaj, I read books. If those rich and famous dare to write books, then I will read the books. I read a few of Donald Trump's books, and like his writings very much. His books keep referring to the Apprentice, but I never watch TV, so dont know what on earth that is. Talking about your son, is he good with music or art? Some kids are outstanding in this area, but not in learning words and whatever. Maybe can give him a few pots and pans to play with, see what kind of music comes out

Scheng, you don't have to be a good person to be rich. Believe me, I know a lot of rich people in the financial sense of the word, that could care less if anyone else was alive! I never really checked into Trump's personality so I didn't know he had anything more to him than stuffed shirts. LOL I'm just being honest. Do you follow all of the rich and famous?

Of course we can and it is a must. We must have realistic goals and expectations and we have to stay positive through life's adversities in order to reach them.

yes absolutely but not in my case. i think it depends on some people because i naturally am a pessimistic person and i always think about the reality in a really negative way so now i can't be realistic and positive at the same time. to me, being realistic means being pessimistic. when i try to be positive, nothing seems realistic to me anymore.

I don't think his example is convincible, one is positive to something because he is passionate on it and he has the dream to realize it, he will set a goal and tries his best. He knows that if he persists, he will make it. He will never do the things which is just his illusion. Sorry maybe my comment offensed you, but that what I'm really thinking of it.

Hi Maggiesunjuan, you bring out a point about being positive and determined. Donald Trump is talking about realizing his limitations. At his age, no matter how positive he can be, he will never win anything in Olympics game. He's already a grandfather, crazy to think about training for Olympics! It does not mean that he cannot be positive and achieve great things in other aspect of his life. That's what he means by being positive but realistic.

It's not always that we can get what we want because we think positively. It is important to know your limitations. I agree with Donald Trump that we should be realistic with our goals in life and then be positive that we can do it.

Hi Doris, I agree with you, on the part about knowing our limitations. It's great to know our limitations and to know our strengths, and then we can do things that utilize our strengths. I like to read books written by Donald Trump. It's so different to read from rich guy's perspective.

Being positive is a virtue but one should not take it too far. As you have mentioned it is childish to be positive and not be realistic about it.First of all one should be aware of ones limitations and accept them without the least compunction. When this is the case then one should try to acquire ones goal with a positive mindset but should not be very rigid about it. One should try to come as near as possible to it and then be satisfied with what one has achieved. This is being realistic within ones framework of limitations. Then one should try and stretch and work on ones limitation to expand it as much as possible so that one can go ahead and come as near as to the goal that has been set.

Hi Veejay, I like reading Donald Trump's books very much. Apparently he does not become a billionaire by being stupid, and unrealistic. He's very practical and know his limitation as well as strengths. I like another of his advice about work hard, but not work stupid. Many people value hard work, but don't know how to work smart. It's true that when we set goal, we should aim higher, so that even if we fail to meet the goal, we are still higher than many people who do not dare to set goal.

Yes!We can be positive and realistic if we can set goals that can be achieved reasonably. For instance an American can dream to be the president of America and he can succeed if he works for it.But he can never become the Prime Minister of India, how much effort he put into the process. So,dream with reasons is what he say.Cheers!

Hi Srganesh, only when the going is tough, then we know how positive and realistic we are. When the economy is booming, and everyone is making money, they are positive but not realistic, since they never even think about saving money. Now is the recession, so many people are too negative. it's great that rich persons like Donald Trump share his thoughts with us, and tell us to be positive and realistic.

being positive and being realistic are two different things and one can be positive but not realistic and one may have the two at the same time it depends on how your positivity and realistic believe work together, you can be negative minded and be realistic and vise versa but its good to be more relaistic

Hi Tundeemma, that's very true. It's very rare to find someone with can strike a balance between positive and realistic. It's good to be realistic and to know our limitations, and positive enough to think of ways to use our strengths to make the best out of any situation. Sometimes the reminder from those rich guys really make sense, after all they can't be rich if they are negative and unrealistic.

I think it would be better to be realistic and positive.. We need to face our life in realistic, what Donald mentioned is true.. you can't dream of being a Olympic winner if you are not even into sports and training. We face obstacles at time for being realistic, however we should always stay positive in our thinking as then we could over come this obstacles in a better mode. Happy MyLotting

Hi Cwong, I enjoy reading his books, after all, how many billionaires are willing to become writer and write books to share thoughts with us. Beside the fact that he's not inot sports and training, he's already a grandfather, crazy to think about winning gold in Olympics. I think it's important to make our choices wisely, so that we do not waste precious time and money doing something, and then regretting it. That's what many people are finding out when they are nearer 40 years old, that they have made a mistake in career choice, and have to return to school to study for a career change.

i guess you can. its a mind over matter kind of thing. the point is too keep looking ahead. Donald trump knows that he can't win an olympic. We should be realistic, but that doesn't mean dashing your dreams. Good mylot here. :)

Hi Dex, I'm a more practical person than dreamer. Time is a commodity that is so precious, if I can have two choices in life, with equal good results to term as "success", I will take the one that needs lesser time. I think even dreams need to be practical. At least we should know how to make our dreams come true, and how to get a good foundation (as in training and education) to make the dream come true.

Hi Ravirai, actually being a student is one of the toughest life lessons. Many students choose the wrong course, because they believe that as long as they work hard, they can get good results, and make a lot of money after their graduation, without thinking about what they are really interested in or good at. Once they make this mistake in college, they have to return to college maybe fifteen years later to study what they really like, and to make a career switch to a career that they really like.

Hi Chivann, most people have to stop themselves from having negative thoughts, and learn to think positively. For those who are positive minded, they have to learn to mellow their expectation and learn to be realistic. It's hard to strike a balance. Glad to see that you are striking a balance.
