I was sitting here eating breakfast the other day and got to thinking about the word "breakfast". I looked at it and thought about it and saw that the word is really two words put together - break and fast.
The original meaning of the word is to break the fast, being the first meal of the day, usually eaten in the morning, it breaks the fasting cycle we do after dinner and through the night while we sleep.
It comes from Middle English "breken", to break + "faste", from Old Norse fasta, to fast. It came into use around the 1400's.
Did anyone ever hear about this before or think about it before?
Have a great day and happy myLotting!!!

That makes perfect sense. Breakfast is the breaking of the fast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and you really shouldn't skip it. People who skip breakfast have the tendency to be obese. It is better to "break" the "fast" and have some fuel on your stomach to start the day!

I do once thought about it, but I do not know the history behind it, thank you for sharing. Fasting month is near to Muslim all over the world. Our breaking th fast time will be near night, time will be vary, depend on the palce you are in. Like I'm in Borneo Island, in Sarawak, we will start fasting around 4.30 am, and break the fast around 6.40 am. We will start next saturday

I knew the meaning of this from a few years back... but before that I never really put it together. yes, I am a late learner in life...
I started back reading books (romance/mystery/historical) back about 4 yrs ago and I read a book, a historical romance, and in it they made a comment about breaking there fast and after that --I swear literally after that book-- I became obsessed with learning all kinds of historical facts... that book started me reading again... looking things up on history and at another pointe I became obsessed with the Declaration of Independence... I know strange that one book started that journey but it gave me an insite to a different world I wanted to learn more about.
As soon as I saw this topic I had to responde because this "phrase" was the beginning of my journey back into books... and really a whole world of research I was on for 2 yrs..
There are so many interesting facts out there that we take things for granted and dont realize where they came from!!
Happy mylotting and have a great day!!!!

I learned about it during college. I took up Nutrition and Diet course in college and this is one thing we learned back then. I also learned that its the most important meal of the day having that we need to break the fast..but then i dont eat breakfast often. i only end up taking coffee and 2 pc bread or cookie.

Yes, schulzie, I've known of its meaning since elementary school. I found it to be a very interesting fact. I taught this little tidbit to my children when they were very young as well; then, and only then, did I realize that most people do not know the origin of the word.
Rather than feeling well informed, I felt a bit odd; somewhat like a sore thumb and all. I had no idea at the time but my very public education in a very poor, rural community was exceptional. When I speak of some of the general things we learned in public I often get stares that most uncomfortable. In my later years I have learned to just keep things to myself unless someone else initiates the conversation.
Thank you for not making me feel as if I'm and oddity for knowing the general orgins of the world: "breakfast".

Yep, I have also realized that. I just couldnt remember just how exactly. I mean if it was really explained to me by a high school/elementary teacher or I just saw the word and had a "Eureka" moment. I do get that sometimes. Look at a certain word and just realize something about it that might be a part of its origin, phonetics, syllables or something or other.^_^
I dont usually get the chance of breaking my fast in the early morning. It would usually be around the time of lunch but my dinners are on the late hours so I think the 'schedule' for breaking my fast is moved up a bit.LOL
Happy myLotting and enjoy your breakfast.

Hey schulzie! Yes, I did know what the words meant! And it
is a great word! I am not a big breakfast eater and I know
that it is really the most important meal of the day because
it is the first meal that we eat! I have never been much
of a morning eater! When I was working I did eat something
quick that I could eat at my desk, or before I got to the
office! I would eat a bagel and cream cheese or a donut and
coffee or go to McDonalds for and Egg McMuffin if I had the
time! But, when I'm home now I will only occasionally eat
breakfast on the weekends if I get up early enough to make
a big breakfast for my boyfriend!

Yes, I learned that in elementary school. They used to teach us all kinds of stuff like that, mostly in asides from the teacher who was talking of something in a similar vein. Like when we were learning to count in Kindergarten--no real preschool or Sesame Street back then in the 50's--the teacher would tell us that other countries had counting, everyone did, but had different devices like the Chinese abacus. When learning to read, the teachers would sometimes tell us the meanings of words like breakfast that were beyond what we'd normally learn.
Of course, the class sizes were manageable back then and nobody put up with misbehavior so the teacher had plenty of time to educate us as much as she could!

That is so interesting I never heard that but it makes perfect sense. You see we all learn something new everyday. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day and a great breakfast.
