This is probably a weird question. But I'm ALWAYS looking for mechanical pencils (usually .7 mm lead) that WORK well and write smoothly (without squeaking or being cheap), and I have SUCH a hard time finding them!
Which ones would you suggest, and about how much are they?

Pilot are great, but they don't last as long as some other brands to my experience!

I just bought a faber castell one. I got the 0.5, but they had multiple sizes. It's plastic (unfortunately) but seems sturdy. it's automatic and came with B grade leads. less than 5 canadian dollars. I like it a lot so far. Otherwise you could try the pilot S serie - about 9$ (us) each. Also plastic, but is targeted for artists and should be great. In any case, you should be able to find a good one on jet pen. It's a specialised pen/pencil/etc online shop. They even sell the fancy kaweco metal body mechanical pencils! The best as far as I know (my friend swears by it) but also a good 45-55$ US.
