Can you concentrate well of what you're doing with some music "on"?

I am a music listener. But, whenever I would have something that needs really focus, (like writing here) I would feel much better to do it with silence, though I like instrumental music (the most).. How about you what is the best mode for you if you have something to be done that needs focus, with music (for music lover) or just silence...? Can we share it here? Thanks in advance...

I suggest you go the classical, or instrumental way if you really want to concentrate with what you're doing with music on. I'm more into country music, like that of Garth Brooks, instrumentals, i go for Kenny G, and a some other blues and jazz artists. Although I heard of people who can study while rock music is on. It really depends.

I need something going on while I'm doing something because I can never just concentrate and focus on one thing without becoming bored and getting more off track then I would with that distraction. For me my music is either playing and I'm singing along while typing or I was a movie I'm playing while I'm on mylot typing away. And then there are times I'm either iming or talking on the phone. I'm also the type of person though that tends to get more work done and more A's on homework assignments while watching TV than just being in a room to myself. I guess for me I get easily bored so I'm more apt to continue to work if there is that one thing I can look at every couple of minutes.

I love music, but there are times when I need to do my activities in total silence, such as when I'm studying or writing some important papers/documents. But there also time when I need a little inspiration to write or do something by listening to some mild music such as slow rock or pop. I guess it's all depend on my mood :)

I am fine with both. Either music on while doing something or without it. But I am more with the music on. I had tried both of it before way back in college. I'm doing our thesis documents and it is passed midnight and I can't think of anything. It is not I'm not focused but because of the silence mu head feels empty. I tried to look for my player and start listening. It somehow gives me the energy, since all of it we're rock music. I finished the documents after 1 hour and that amused me. Maybe songs or music can stimulate energy. While other can make me fall asleep.

If I don't have music on, I can't concentrate at all. I need to have the radio or something on in the background, otherwise the room is too quiet. If I am writing or reading, I like instrumental music, or music in a foreign language. If I am just concentrating on the music, then I will listen to music in English.

I work better with music, I listen to upbeat music while cleaning or at work. I listen to classical if I'm reading or studying, I've been told that classical music while studying helps you retain what you've learned and helps you retain longer. My daughter listens to all kinds of music when she studies, no matter what subject and my two sons listen to heavy metal and rap music while they study and it does help them do the work faster and they remember what they did! I can't read or concentrate if there are words, I have a tendency to get distracted with other thoughts.

I could work with music as long as it's relaxing or calming. I like to listen to intrumentals, but in a very low volume when I am thinking and working on a topic. Good day my friend.

Every time I do my posting here in mylot, I make it a point to have the radio on. Music helps me to be in the mood and to be creative as I respond and as I start discussions. It helps me to gain focus in what I do.

Hi. I am a music listener too. When I need to concentrate on something, I like to have music on, or else I will find it very hard to concentrate due to tiredness. But still, it depends on the kind of music I am listening to. I can only listen to some soft music when I need concentration. Rock song will only annoy me under this circumstances.

I, too, love music, but it really depends on my mood. There are time that I love working when I listen to loud music, there are times that when I'm writing I don't like listening to loud music. My daughter is the exact opposite, she really is what you call the musical intelligence. She is more effective when she listens to her favorite music. She loves studying while listening to music.

Yes I understand that, that's the trend and the ability of the new generation. We have same attitude in terms of music. There were times I love listening while doing another thing and there were also instances that I don't listen for other thing to do...thanks for responding...

i like listning to music while i do things like read or write, buts its really distracting. when i'm typing sometimes i type lyrics to the music. also while i'm reading it seems like kyrics are in the book and i read to the beat of the music.

Think the only thing that I can't do is read a book. I have ADD(attention defacit disorder) so I have a tendancy to do multiple things at one time. never did really well in HS because i was constantly getting distracted and couldn't sit still without getting tired or starting to doodle, that was until I started listening to music. when I started listening to music the grades went up, not much but just enough, and I could remember a lot more of what I studied the night before. Can't sit in a car without the radio off, drives me nuts, don't like actually being able to hear myself think lol. Being a mom of two kids, music is a good destraction for both myself and the kids when it comes to cleaning and getting dinner ready. My spouse and I have totally different tastes so it's hard to listen to music without hearing someone complain.
