Canary and Finch fights. That's right, instead of dogs or roosters (can't use the real word) some azzholes have decided to make a blood sport out of canaries and finches for fights where heavy gambling for the winners take place.
In an article, about 150 canaries and finches were seized from a Shelton, Connecticut home for the purpose of engaging these songbirds in fights.
http://www.wtnh.com/dpp/news/crime/news_wtnh_shelton_police_bust_canary_fighting_operation_200907270720
(NOT a referral link but to article)
Here's an excerpt from the article:
Shelton (WTNH) - Nineteen people were arrested Sunday after police raided a home and seized 150 canaries and finches in a suspected bird fighting ring.
Police also seized $8,000 in cash inside the house on Ripton Road.
The suspects, from as far away as Newark, New Jersey, and the Boston suburbs, face several charges including animal cruelty and illegal gambling.
Police heard about what was going on, got a search warrant, and moved in.
Now I think most of us are against any kind of animal cruelty, and especially if it involves using dogs or roosters for fights where sicko spectators watch the animals fight to the death and make money out of it....but are sick people so desperate to also now use small songbirds for blood sports as well??...WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?
When is this kind of crap going to end anyway?
There's a video that shows the neighborhood where this home was, where the bird fights took place...this ain't no dumpy area but a nice, clean, all American quaint neighborhood. The birds seized had eyes out, limbs missing and many were just plain dead...
sorry for the ranty nature of this but this makes my blood boil to hear of such a thing

It seems even though many animal blood sports are illegal in most states these b*stards find a way to continue them

Well, what will the dimentos think of next. Glad some of them were arrested. What do you what the hell is wrong with people??!! What the hell ISN'T wrong with people ??!!??!! There are some sick @#$ucks out there. I think we need to take up a collection, buy a hot, sweaty unpleasant unoccupied jungle deep in the snake infestedness of someplace, put up an electric fence and hand the deed over to these morons and tell them to have at it. Ofcourse no animals go with them but the snakes and ick that is already there. Ya, that might be good.

In most cases animal fights are illegal in most places...still doesn't stop people from engaging in animal blood sports though

Using animals this way is very cruel and plain sickening. Back in the 1980's I was in Puerto Rico and came across a place that was doing the chicken fights. A friend was with and wanted to go in but I told him if he wanted to watch that then he was on his own, we left. Remember the football player who was having dog fights on his estate? There's money involved in this stuff, good old gambling at its finest. Forcing animals to fight is sick and needs to be wiped out. People can do better than that.

Oh yes--I remember Michael Vick and his dog fight ring. It would be great if every state made any kind of animal fights illegal, but even then, people would find a way to get around it and continue the practice

Not too sure about what states have laws against dog fighting or the provinces in Canada as well. I'm sure that at least most do have something in place to deal with that and as well as protection for other animals. The problem is that like any illegal activity there are people who are still willing to break the law to make money so this greedy, ugly event will continue to go on in secret places. We just have to hope that people will report them and that the law will be sufficient to provide punishments that will be severe enough to halt these activities and deter these idiots from committing the crimes repeatedly. Wishful thinking, greed usually prevails.

That is just horrible. I had finches before as pets, and I'm not sure how they can incite them to fight on command... but the finches I had would occasionally fight if they thought they could get a female. Although luckily never anything nearly like that article. I don't see why people would want them to do that on purpose!

The video said that they guessed that the birds were starved, making them not only hungry but very aggressive

Ooh god that is really horrible and you took the words right out of my mouth, words that I say frequently, "what is wrong with people?" Some people are cold and don't see animals as anything feeling or anything important, but this story has me really worried. Some days when I hear about all of the horrible murders in the world, rape, torture, and many other injustices, it makes me scared that maybe there is something wrong and violent in human nature still....I mean why else would anyone be willing to gamble and participate in songbird fights? When I think about that maybe it is something defective in human nature,I worry but on the other hand I do get comfort and belief in human nature when thinking of my own beliefs and views, and my intense love of animals, and that makes me feel better, and I remember that there are soooooo many people out there that are the same.
but there are still too many cruel weirdos out there

Do you think there seems to be MORE negativity in the world since we're exposed to it via the news media? We're bombarded for the most part on nothing but negative news and hardly anything positive, so it desensitizes people in general to any kind of violent behavior

finches? wow. but those are really small birds! I can't imagine seeing them fighting competitively! how sad rooster fighting is very common here in my country but i wish that it will be outlawed soon. I've heard of so many horror stories about it... aside from roosters there is talk of bringing a grayhound race track here! although it is not the same as fighting, it still is a form of animal cruelty :( i hope that the protests against it will be successful.

Yes greyhound racing is cruel as well..I'm even against horse racing as the horses are trained and forced to race from a very young age when their legs aren't even fully developed

Hi, I cannot understand what the fun is in watching animals fight. Some people are really sick! Sometime ago here they found cages with dogs packed in it in a miserable state, they were also to be used for dog fights. I never heard of fighting canaries and finches though. I never saw the roosters either so cannot understand how that do that. These people must be place to justice and with harsh penalties and I would send them to jail so maybe there they find someone who'll punch them in the face and maybe break their jaw! that's what they merit.

Rooster fights actually dates way far back sad to say...and look at the "blood sport" of bullfighting...that's been going on for a long time too--but you're right...can't see why people think any kind of animal fighting is "entertainment"

I understand the rage- i too feel very strongly about this. im glad you brought it up in a discussion because it brings it to attention. Alot of people let "under the table" things STAY under the table. Just because they cannot SPEAK, it doesnt change the fact that they have feelings. They arent for sport, they arent toys. They are living breathing beings, and deserve to be treated as such. i had no idea they were doing this with canaries and finches. Regardless of what KIND of animal, it is dispicable. Who came up with this idea???

I have no idea who came up with this idea..perhaps they figured it would attract less attention as opposed to the noise dog fights could create...whatever reason, it's a sick one

In japan, on a website (I forget the link) they have bug fights. They post the videos online as amusement, I'm not sure if they bet on it but it's quite nasty to have large insects kill each other as they are aggravated in a small container. Different bugs eat each other in the wild which is probably why it's not illegal, but I still think it's not right to force some bugs to attack each other in a small container for amusement.

Yes I'm aware there are bug fights as well--people must be really desperate for a "sport" event --if that's what you want to call it

Yeah it's disgusting, if they are so interested in violence and betting why don't they get into boxing or something. It's pretty sissy to train some poor animal to kill other animals and it doesn't prove your strength or "manilyness" at all.

Actually in Louisiana they just recently made rooster fighting illegal, which doesnt suprise me because we are always slower than all of the other states lol. I think I know a place where they used to hold rooster fights, but when they made it illegal it closed down.

Making rooster fights illegal isn't going to stop it though...dog fights are illegal in most states as well, yet they still continue

I was unaware of canary fights until very recently probably within the last two weeks. I came across and article of a seisure of birds from some homes and I was quite shocked. I don't understand the sick obsession.
