Hey,
Well you need to install an Anti virus software on your computer, such as Kaspersky, that is the one I personally use. Also, most of the Anti Virus programs come with firewalls, you also need a firewall. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

The basics: Install anti-virus software in your laptop. Nowadays, it is also essential to install an anti-spyware program that will protect and prevent spyware from attacking your computer. Make sure also that you active the firewall that come built-in in your operating system.
Must-have: If you frequently install and uninstall programs from your computer, one of your must-haves is a registry cleaner. There are several good cleaners that you can download online. You can check review sites to see in detail how you can specifically benefit from the program. In general, registry cleaner will ensure the stability of performance of your computer and will prevent system crashes.
Tips: Optimize your browser to maintain your good browsing experience. You can also use the built-in system tools that will clear out junks from your computer and defragment the files to maintain your computer's good performance.

First check whether all driver's are working properly or not like audio, video, bluetooth, wireless, modem, etc.. Then check for any antivirus software in ur pc and do updates through internet.;-) and most important thing to protect ur pc from virus which comes either from net or additional hardware like hard disk or pendrive connected to ur pc.. Scan ur hardware when u connect it externally.

hi akenhuang
as many said over here, one of the most important things is the antivirus, get a nice antivirus (licensed one) so that it can update and keep safe from the latest viruses...i would recommend kaspersky although i use avast professional, avast and avg are very alike... you can also have an avast or avg free edition which is available on the internet, they work quiet decently if you use your laptop in your home...don't forget to update them regularly...
internet is the most famous source of viruses so better keep a nice antivirus and update that regularly.
you certainly must been provided with a cd of your motherboard if you have bought a desktop, keep the cd safe, you will need it later, those discs are most important because it contains the drivers for the motherboard, when you format the computer you will need these discs for installing the required drivers....of sorry i forgot you have a dell notebook, anyways...
if you want to burn cd's and dvd's then you require to install nero or roxio, i personally like nero more as it more easy to use, if you are running vista then install nero 8 series because the older versions of nero bring in the "com surrogate not responding" alert and sometimes due to this the windows explorer restarts and it gets irritating, so better use the new version of nero, the 8 series... i think dell provides some disc burning software along with the computer
, anyways nero would be nice if you want another software to burn discs.
for multimedia i would recommend you to install video players because the default media players don't have some of the required codecs to run various files, some nice video players are gom player, vlc player, kmplayer, classic media player... they are nice and run almost all of the video formats... for listening to music you have a nice windows media player already, you can also install winamp or foobar2000 for listening to music.
i almost forgot to say this, this is very IMPORTANT FOR BATTERY LIFE... frequently let your battery drain it's power, don't always run your computer with battery on charging, let it discharge sometimes, keeping the battery on charge at all times reduces your battery life so don't forget to discharge them...
well there are many other minor things that you will come to know of from your friends, have a great time and congrulations on your new laptop!... if you want to ask something you can also message me, i will try to answer it...

I think when you bought Laptop nowadays it comes with antivirus and free trial of Microsoft office. I say that because since you often use your laptop for surfing the internet then you need protection for antivirus. Also be sure that you don't use your laptop on the hot and humid temperature as this may cause your laptop to overheat. In regards with how long you should open your laptop, I guess It would be better if you stick to 10 hrs per day or less for as long as you are not in a hot and humid area and you gauge the temperature of your laptop then I guess there will no problem with that.
