If you have pets, do you get them groomed?

My boyfriend loves to take my one dog with long dark hair (an Akita-Black Labrador retriever mix) to get bathed and shaved every few months. We have two dogs and the other one has short hair, so he's easy to bathe at home and brush all the dead hair off, but the other one sheds like crazy so we get him groomed about every 6 months.
We just took him to get groomed yesterday and the groomer put a little bandana around his neck. He looks so cute and probably feels better since he's cleaner and a little cooler without quite as much fur.
Do you have a dog or cat (or another pet) that you get groomed? If so, how often do you get it groomed?

We have three dogs and a cat. The dogs have to go monthly because they get fleas really bad. So they have to get treatments. I dont know how often my mom takes the cat though. Its been a while.

Why do the dogs get fleas? Do other dogs or pets in your neighborhood bring fleas?
Luckily, my dogs have not had any incidents of fleas in YEARS...

I have a dog. He is a shitzu, maltese mix so his hair can grow very long. I have to get him groomed every 2 months or so cause his hair grows so fast and so long that he cant see. If I go more than 3 months I have to put the hair along his face in a ponytail holder.
Also the hair along his belly will get matted quickly if I let it grow to long.

Yes, it's horrible when dogs with long hair accumulate matted hair. You must take great care of your dog. My dogs don't have hair QUITE that long to the point it would become matted, but they both shed pretty badly.
Thanks for the comment!

I have a dog, Sherlock, but I don't take him to get groomed. He's very low maintenance. I bathe him once a month (unless he gets himself into something smelly - and that has happened), and then afterward I put on his flea/tick medication. And instead of brushing him, I just get a lint roller (not when he's wet of course). I used to brush his coat, but one day I was playing and I used the lint roller. He loved it! Plus, it gets so much hair up before it sheds. My dog is an 8 pounds, 2 year old, 3/4 Chihuahua and 1/4 Corgi mix.
My sister and brother-in-law have two large dogs, although I'm not sure of their breed. I think they are a mix (both were purchased at the pound, albeit years apart). One of them is short haired, and they can bathe him and groom him themselves. But the other one, she grows fur very quickly, so they take her once every two months for grooming. The last time they did that, my brother-in-law refused to believe the dog they were giving him was his. She looked so different he thought they made a mistake!

I LOVE low-maintenance. Not only am I low maintenance, but one of my dogs is pretty low maintenance... My short-haired pit bull -- although he does shed.
My other dog sheds a lot but he's also pretty low maintenance as well, and my boyfriend insists on getting him shaved and groomed professionally every few months.

I have two miniature poodles called Secret and Magic. Secret is white with black patches and Magic is plain black. Secret has a corded coat and Magic has a curly coat. They don't moult therefore their coats grow and grow. When it gets long they are difficult to comb and brush. They can get tangles and mats if their fur gets all that long. I have a dog groomer visit my house every 6 to 8 weeks. She does an excellent job of grooming them. Secret looks a totally different dog afterwards. His pedigree name is Secret Party Circle. With long fur his black dots on his body are hidden and with short fur they are visible.

I haven't had a pet in a long time. We never got her groomed, she was an outside dog and back then you just did with some scissors. Now I see rolling vans like "Happy Tails" where they come to you or you can see them stopped in a parking lot grooming other dogs and they will shear your mutt for a few bucks.

I've actually never had a pet that needed to be groomed professionally. We have a cat right now and she is self-cleaning (she'd probably kill me if I even tried to bathe her). I used to have a dog but he was short haired. I did bathe him about once a month and he didn't really mind. He'd just stand there, bury his nose in my chest and wait for it to be over...He was a beautiful little dog.

hello Bethany1202,
We used to have three dogs. But when we went abroad they went away too. So when we came back, we decided to buy a new one. We call him Muffin. He's almost two years now. We love him so much for he is a good dog. He's so behave and really can guard our house.
I do give him a bath every week, like during my rest days. He love s taking a bath that you don't need to carry him and bring him there in his bath area. Sometimes my youngest is helping me in giving him a bath. He will run close to you once he saw you out side. It's the best dog that we ever have. Glad we found him.

neither of my dogs are long hair so I can take care of everything but trimming their nails. When they get to long I take them to the vet.
I have a friend who has a seeing eye dog that has to be taken to be shaved because he is allergic to his own hair and dandruf.
