Sorry I'm driving!

Why don't cell/mobile phone companies, put this option on their handsets? I believe this would be a great safety feature, and probably save meny lives throughout the world. Once a caller got this reply, they would instantly know it's unsafe to talk at the present. So, how about it, manufactures?

I do talk when I'm driving but if I'm on the highway or something I use my bluetooth. But sometimes I forget it and just pick up the phone. I pick up for only certain ringtones...my parents and boyfriend have the same ring tone so if it's from them I will pick it up because they are calling me for a reason. I don't thik I'm endangering lives especially if I use a bluetooth, both hands are the on the wheel..etc.

Hello dreamr, hands free has certainly helped, but many people forget, as they would with my suggestion, this is human nature, however, I'm trying to think of something very simple that could reduce the tarrible waste of lives on our roads. Thanks for your input.

Yeah I didn't mean to make it sound that it's not a good idea. I do agree that it's a good feature to have on the phone but it's up to the user of the phone to set up that feature.

I don't think when a mobile with a sensor tat signals for a sorry i m driving message, Bcoz such a mobile costs more. Unless thr's a good order or customer requirement, no manufacturer will release such a costlies product.. And their's very less percentage who use for such a case. I think it depend's on individual who receives or reject's or keeps mobile in silent.. I prefer my mobile to be in silent

Well I'm sorry, I have to disagree with you. With all the devices mobile phones have today, a simple "I'm driving" mode switch shouldn't cost much to add. And I believe it would be a huge selling point, and even force other companies to take up the challenge. How many people are killed or injured everyday, dureto drivers using phones. Thanks for taking part.

It has no relation with which type of cell phone you choose, but depends on if the telecom provider has this service. I don't know the situation in other country, at least in the country I stay, my provider has the service of voice mail box and there is no etra fee for it.

That is an excellent idea my friend and I wish mobile phone companies would take that on board. I know that is it illegal for someone to speak on a mobile phone whilst driving if they are holding the phone. Even if they are using a hands free kit their attention during the call might be directed away from the road. If I rang a friend and had such a message I would ring back later.

Thank you max, I worry about the increasing number of people killed and injured on our roads, and I think some feature to reduce this would be very simple for the manufacturers. I believe it would also be a powerful selling point for the first company. Thank you for your support.

Why should cell phone manufactures add this to the phone when you already have caller ID and voice mail. If it is not safe to answer your phone then do not answer it. If the temptation is to great then turn your phone off while driving and then you can turn it back on when you are no longer driving. A phone is not an instant messanger, there is no reason to have that option. My sister's recorded message is that she is either at work or ignoring the phone, she will call back. It is a very effective message. For this instance it could be: If I do not answer my phone it is because I am driving. For mine I actually have: If I do not answer I am either driving or in class because the rest of the time I answer, leave a message.

Hey okkidokitokki, maybe you and your sister use those features, but there are many that don't. You only have to see the number of drivers talking while they are driving, and putting themselves, and others at risk. In many countries, talking on the phone related accidents, have surpassed DUI accidents. This was just a thought I had that may help reduce the number of related deaths on the road. Surely, manufactures don't want their products contributing to road tolls around the world! Thanks for your input.

i am not a manufacturer, but I think it is a great idea. That way people wouldn't try to just get that quick question in "since you are driving" because you know if you answer it at all they are going to try to get something in real quick!!! Then they would know that you were not simply ignoring the call but that it really isn't safe for you to take it at the present time!!

I would imagine that something could give the caller the information without the phone vibrating or ringing, and maybe have a number the caller could press to override the message. That should be used only in an emergency situation. Surely manufactures could look at something that would help save lives on the roads around the world.

It sounds like a good idea to make it available. I wish we could all just be responsible.....

Yeah you are right! Cell phone manufacturers could come up with some technology related to picking up phone calls while driving in the future. But yet we have to listen to what your caller has to say and this can take your concentration away from driving. So I don't think that any technology related to this can come up! Happy mylotting!

Well, I believe it would be easy to add a feature like this to cell phones, considering how advsnced they are already. It would have to be simple, like just one butteon that disengages the ring, and vibration, but informs the caller that you're driving. I'm not very knowledgable in IT, but I'm sure it wouldn't add much cost to the price of phones, and I'm sure would be a great safety selling point. Thanks for your response.

It may not be the answer, but manufactures should put safety first, and at least try and come up with something. Hands free, in my opinion only scratches the surface. Thanks for responding.

What a great idea! You could set your phone with that message for all calls before getting in the car. I’ve had to explain that I was behind the wheel when my phone rang on many occasions because, not only I worry about the safety aspect but knowing my luck a cop will come towards me from around the corner as soon as I put that phone to my ear!

Hi paula, it's only a thought, and there are probably many better ideas. But manufacturers have to be aware their products are killing many people everyday, and they must address the safety problem. Thank you for your response. I wouldn't worry too much about the cop, he probably wouldn't take any notice.

That sounds like a good idea. Of course a lot of people probably wouldn't use the feature, but I think many would, since they know that the caller is not being ignored. As long as its optional and can be overrided in case of emergency.

It's only a thought that I think could reduce road deaths around the world. There are probably many better safety features manufactures could have in the phone. This did generate some other ideas though. Thank you for your response.

I don't accept the call while driving, unless if I complete my cellphone with handset. It's too dangerous if we call while driving, and I'm always denied the call. The manufacturer have been considering this for safety and style.

Not to accept calls while driving is a good policy, but wouldn't it be nice if the caller knew you were driving, and that was the reason you didn't take the call? Manufacturers should be considering more safety, or awareness features on future models. Thanks for the input.

your idea might actually work. i mean people are just inherently lazy. some of them are not so safety conscious. just like in a car there are precautionary measures being installed like the airbags for example. i think having a feature where you could just place your status on a cellphone might actually work to promote safety. just like the one you mentioned above. with online chatting, we do know the status of the person whom we want to chat with. like with ym there are status like available, i'm busy, brb, etc. well, why not adopt this status feature on cellphones so that the caller might actually have an idea what the person on the other line is doing? i think your idea is excellent! i think it will be the future of cellphones.

Good thinking tomjoad. I'm not very IT intelligent, but I know a bit about human behaviour. If all you had to do before you start your car is press a button, then there is a fair chance you will do it. At the end of the journey you reactivate the mode. It should be as simple as possible. Too many people are being killed. Thank you for your input.

I don't think it depends on the manufactures of cell phones, but depends on the company which provides your service. If they provide the service of voice mailbox, then you may set the word in advance "I am driving. Please leave your message". Then you may close the ring of your cell phone and needn't answer it when driving, all calls will be transferred to the voice mailbox automatically.

Hey studentabe, that is certainly an option. I really don't care where it comes from, I just want someone to stop the road deaths caused by people driving and talking, or texting. We had a court case here yesterday, where three people would be alive today, if the driver of a truck didn't answer his phone. Thank you for your suggextion.
