The minimum wage in Minnesota (United States) is now $7.75. It was just raised by the government. I personally make $8.25, so this change doesn't really affect me very much. But I'm sure it's a nice change for those who were making $6.55 before the switch. (FYI: These dollar amounts are in USD, sorry if that makes it confusing!)
What are the laws concerning minimum wage in your country or area? What IS the minimum wage, and where do you live? Do you think it's a good or bad idea for the government to RAISE minimum wage during a time with such a "bad economy"?

In the UK, it is £5.80 an hour, at an exchange rate of £1=$1.60, thats $9.28.
There has been a lot of debate here about what level the minimum wage should be set at. So far we havn't experienced much of an increase in unemployment DUE to the minimum wage. But there will be a point where employers start laying off in higher numbers. It's difficult to know when that point would be though.
If the minimum wage is at a pretty low level, it might be able to be increased even in a recession. It's a difficult decision i'd rather leave to the experts though.

Our minimum wage in Illinois is now $8.00. It went there on July 1, 2009. I think it is great that the wage went up even in hard times since the cost of everything is raising. My only problem with this is before the minimum wage went up it was $7.75 and I had reach the place where I got my first raise. So my hourly wage was brought up to $8. Now even though I've been with this company longer the person who is hired off the street will be making what I make now.

The minimum wage here in California is $8.00 an hour. It was raised back in January 2008. Before this it was $7.50. If you're interested in learning more about the history of California's minimum wage you can see it at the following link: https://www.dir.ca.gov/iwc/MinimumWageHistory.htm
I haven't earned a paycheck in years so it doesn't affect me at all! LOL Though if I were to get a job, it's nice to know the starting wage is $8.00 an hour, which is a big difference compared to what I used to make.
I think it's a good idea to raise the minimum wage, even during this bad time (don't boo me please). Otherwise how else are the working people supposed to buy what they need or pay bills that are due? As it is most people here in California have to make a lot more than this to be able to make rent, because real estate here is rather costly.

Minimum salary in my city, Jakarta, capital city of Indonesia, is around $110 per month, which I consider very low considering the living cost. But there are a lot of people still paid under that amount, cause maybe our compensation system is not as good as you guys at US, we still a developing country and the government is not that strict in implementing the rule. I am very grateful to have quite a big salary cosidering I'm still a fresh graduate, so I still can save for future plan.
