Are there such things as universal moral values?

I once read an article where the author claimed that moral values are different for every culture, so no one has a right to criticize the moral values of other cultures because all morals are relative. Do you agree with this? I don't because I believe that there are moral values that are needed for a society to exist. For example, killing should not be allowed in any society because then members of the society would stop trusting each other. What would happen then, of course, is that people will isolate themselves because of distrust. This would then result in the destruction of society. Of course, survival would be then difficult if this would be the situation, so predictably, people will form small societies to protect themselves. But of course, people would only form groups with people whom they trust will not kill them. Therefore, prohibiting killing is necessary for a society to exist. I would cite more arguments for why we need universal moral values, but this post would be too long and no one would read it.

in my opinion, there should be common moral values for every culture. the differences are to what extent these values have become customed and to what extent people in that culture believe in these values and how these values are presented. whatever the case, i think there is moral baseline that everyone can not go beyond that. for example, filial piety is considered one of the most important moral values in my country and our ancestors placed great emphasis on it. it is the responsibility for the son to rear his old parents. but as far as i know, it is common for parents live alone when grow old in western culture. however, i believe it doesn't mean that their kids take no care of them.

Hello ifancy. I agree with you that there should be common moral values for all people. And I agree that it should be the responsibility of all people to take care of their parents no matter how old their parents get.

Well there are many different morals not only in different countries but also in different classes of people. In my opinion though there is one moral value that should be in EVERY person regardless where they are from, its HONESTY...

Hello youreyes. I agree with you. Honesty is definitely one moral value that every person in every society must have. There would be no point in communicating with one another if we know that every person we communicate with would just lie to us.

See that is the problem these days, you don't know who is being honest and who isn't with you. It happens in all walks of life and its sad. I am tired of the lies that have come to me face to face. Some do not know how to deal with an honest person. Its ok, I am who I am and my honesty will not change.

Hi, Angelajoy!
Our cultural differences don't extend to the basic moral values of society. Even those who would kill off everyone they dislike generally believe it is for the purpose of improving their culture to make it follow their basic morals. Terrorists don't want to destroy the planet or its inhabitants; just those with whom the disagree, or those they feel are acting immorally. I could not agree with any of that, but I can see what it is they are doing.

Hello cobrateacher! Once again you give an enlightening answer. I agree with you. We are really not so different from terrorists in that we all value justice and life. I think the difference lies only in our belief systems. We all want to act morally, and we basically have the same moral values, but we apply these moral values differently.
