Help me speed up my laptop!

I have absolutely no idea why my laptop is running so slowly these days, it varies - sometimes it behaves normally and at other times it freezes or just runs at the speed of a tortoise. It also often shows that the CPU memory usage is 100% despite barely any programs running.
It's an Acer Aspire 3690 and has 2GB Ram, operating system is Windows Vista. Initially, I was sold it with only 500MB ram and it ran painfully slow on Vista but when I added more ram, it speeded up - these days though, it's back to how it was at the beginning.
The laptop is also very hot at times and I wonder if one of the fans is not working, would this effect the speed the laptop could run at?

hi, your 2GB memory is big enough, i also use my 1GB Acer, but it can work or run every soft quickly, and open two firefox browsers with 10 tabs one browser in add,you said cpu got 100%, maybe virus attacks your computer or you have installed too many softs, or your hardware has some problems, you might run"musconfig" to startup, cancel some unnecessary soft items, so you can start into system more fast,i don't be sure my advice is good, cpu 100% must be the sick software startup in your system

Yes i do agree so.May be its your hardware problem.Which is not so good. You should contact with your dealer as soon as possible.
Anther thing i faced that is if there is any Trojan in your machine. Then machine gets extremely slow due to that Trojan. You can use trojan remover. Its helped me many times.

but if the fun is not working your laptop I think will shut it self down to cool down.. or you are infected with a virus. try scanning your laptop. Heating of laptop is I guess normal. because it is slim you will feel the heat of all the parts of your laptop outside cause the fan inside serves as a exhaust fan so all the heat inside will come out. and as you said your computer runs at 100% cpu usage that indicates a virus infection. mostly if you are infected with a virus. your computer runs slow, your internet will eventually be slow, and your cpu usage is 100% and it hangs up. sometimes shutdown.

I know how you feel! Try remove the transperant feature 10% performance increase. Advanced Windows Care helps alot 25%. Do disk clean ups when you have the time 10%. I hope this helped btw, I have vista too.

the fans are very important for a computer, if it not working then you might be in a lot of problem, the fan makes a lot of noise i think you can make it out whether if it is not working... well some of the internet browser eats up a lot of ram, firefox is one of them, acrobat readers eat a hell lot out of the ram. 2 gb of ram sounds pretty healthy but your computer is eating it all up, that must be really slow then...
one of the things you can do is go to your graphics card options and switch off the vertical sync, switch off the windows aero scheme and instead use windows vista basic, clean up your disc with disc clean which is already provided by windows, do not do much of multi tasking, if you like to listen to music all the time then you might want to use foobar2000 coz it is easy on the ram, don't play heavy games and install all the unnecessary softwares and sometimes scan for viruses, some viruses make the computer slow, clean your registry- don't do it manually if you don't know how to do it, instead install ccleaner from here
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/download/58156f96255767aeec553947d393ec2c/
you can also clean the junk files with ccleaner and update it regurlarly...
if nothing happens formatting is always the best option, but that is the last option
just be careful sometimes the computer really gets really slow when the antivirus is scanning your computer, it might be the case with you. i would recommend avast as an antivirus, it is good and easy on the computer.
you also see to it that you don't crowd your C drive, leave a lot of space coz when you fill this drive up the computer gets slow. partition your hard drive and keep the media stuff on the other drive, anything except the C drive
i hope i am of some help, all the best

Slow speed is most often than not caused by virus and other malware attacks. It could also be a problem with the registry as it may be corrupted. What you can do is to scan your laptop using the latest and updated anti-virus program and see if your laptop is infected. Your anti-virus, if updated, will be able to tell you what to do with the infection. You can also download the Avast! Virus Cleaner to get rid of the infected files at http://avast.com/eng/down_cleaner.html.
You should also do some regular cleaning of your laptop like optimizing your browser and deleting unnecessary files from the system. If you have a wireless connection, stay away from devices that may cause dropping of your connection.

Well I've tried running Avast, AVG, CCleaner, Spybot search and Destroy and supposedly eliminated any beasties, however Advanced Windows System seems to have unearthed quite a lot of stuff. I'm well aware that I had a bit of spyware/adware in the past and almost managed to get rid of it but it seemed that completely getting rid of it involved spending ages in the registry and seemed far too complicated for me.

Are you cleaning your registry manually? I suggest you don't as this may end up in more problems than one. Get a good registry cleaner that you can download online. There are free versions and you can also use the trial versions.
For an all-in-one solution that can resolve your issue, why not try Windows Live One Care? You can get it from http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm
It works, you bet.

Hot is not very good for laptops because it could really mean BIG PROBLEM. maybe you're right that the fan doesn't works. The only problem is that your laptop may run smoothly but it can explode anytime because of heat in it. Be careful with that.

Vista is notoriously slow and since you said it worked find after upgrading your RAM, you have probably installed lots of small utilities that are now using up some of that extra RAM, can you uninstall a few things that are loading into memory at start up?
Also you should be running a Spyware/addware scanning utility, I used Spybot Search & Destroy, I almost guarantee that you have some nasties lurking in there somewhere. A bit of advice, do NOT purchase any spyware/addware detection software, you can get Spybot S&D for free (as it should be) from http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html (not an affiliate link) where you can choose you own language and download it. Run the full scan, it will show up anything that has attacked your machine.
You then need to run a full system scan for viruses, I dont know which AV software you have installed (I use AVG free) but they are all pretty good and, with a full system scan, should pick up any threats on your machine.
I would advice you to regularly delete unwanted files like large images, video and other stuff that eats up hard drive space. Defraging regularly also frees up hard disk space. You need this for "virtual" memory, which all windows operating systems utilise to run at optimal speed, I wont try to explain this, just try to have at least 25& of your hard drive empty.
Failing all of the above, you may need to have it looked at by an engineer.
Please let us know how you get on, I would be interested to know if you have spyware or addware problems, I feel this is probably where your problem lies.

Hey,
One thing I did to speed up my laptop was to buy extra RAM. This helped my computer in a huge way and it comes really cheap too. Also, defragment your computer regularly so the HDD can run at optimal speeds. Make sure you have a good day, Happy Lotting!!

I think your problem is very basic my friend. You said that your operating system is vista...Just change your operating system into Xp, for better performance and speed. Vista is prove to be annoying because of it's slow loading. It is true that vista is better than Xp, for feature but it will slow computer processor. If prefer not to change that vista...you need more plenty of RAM to make it faster...that is about 8gig for better performance...but the problem is that laptop here in the Philippines is carried only 2gig or 4 gig...
I suggest change your operating systems...
Happy mylotting!!!

Just restart your laptop or putoff for atleast 10 min and then start and if again you see high CPU utilization, then scan for any virus. There are good online scans available. Check the fan. As someone told heat is not good for laptops. Better restart and check for anything further.
