On a current affairs program last night, there was a story about bad postal employees. The amount of stealing from our posted articles is just unbelievable. Birthday cards for kids, and children's cards to grandparents, as well as credit cards, and chegue books. I remember many years ago, my daughter mailed me AUD300 from Australia to Thailand. (She was asked to TT it, but she wrapped the money in tinfoil, and mailed it. It went missing, and I immediately thought is must have been taken in Thailand, as that sort of thing was going on here. Now, after watching the programe, I think it may have never left Australia. I also had a birthday card to my grandson go missing. Money was alos in the card. Have you ever had cards not delivered? Thank you for any input.

My friend sent a package to her native country with money and the other person never got it. Also money sent out for a bill from the same friend was sent out and it disappeared and a few weeks later was sent back to her house in 2 different pieces. And ME personally I have sent out $10 for a friend on her birthday and she never got it! :O

I knew this is pretty common in Asian countries, but obviousely it goes on in The States, and Australia. There are many dishonest people around. Thank you for your response.

Thats why in Australia they have registered post, if they lose parcel Australia Post are liable. Even though it costs bit more, its safer than normal post. Or I guess I could say express post would do the same not sure. I usually post with express post or registered post, haven't had any problems, I don't trust the normal post.

Hi my friend Mipen. I think that some post office employees find out what is being sent and steel it in some countries very sadly. Money is one of the things that they like to get their hands on. One time a post box was set on fire in the area my mum used to live in. Also there was a case of a lazy postman that couldn't be bothered to deliver the letters to people. The police found he had lots of sacks of mail that had never been delivered. I was so sad to find out the disk of music I sent from England to Poland my friend didn't ever receive. I stayed in Australia for many months and sent parcels home by sea. Amazingly all my parcels got home safely. They weren't valuable so I felt fine sending them. They got home before I did because that trip of mine lasted just over one year.

Hello max, Unfortunately, like many things in life, a few bad apples give an industry a bed name. Inside a post office, the post boxes are just open pidgeon holes where any employee can help themselves. Security is not good.It is a good idea to insure valuable articles. The news story I saw featured Australia Post, and they had a postman with sacks of mail in his house. These psople mustn't have any feelings at all. Thanks for responding, max, and have a nice weekend. Mike

Hey jessi, I guess photographs might feel like a card, so it woild be more likely to be taken. However, now we can send these by the Internet. That is, of course, if the reciever is connected. Thank you for your response.

Hello there! My friend ha an experience of losing something in the mail.It was many many years ago, her mother sent her money thru mail. She wasn't able to receive that money, only the letter and the envelope was already opened when she received it. It was a horrible experience for her. Now, she is using western union to send and receive money from her parents.

Hello galileo,Just another story in the saga of missing mail. The postal employees who do this are very heartless creatures, and give their fellow workers a bad name also. Western Union is an option, albeit an expenxive one. Thanks for your input.

Our post
I have got two times my mail opened. First time it was a big envelope which was adressed to my son and had a birthday card and a small book inside. My mouth was widely open when I went to collect the post from the floor and saw right away that one big letter was open and a book corner stick out from it...I couldn´t understand that somebody (the post delivery guy) had open something. And another time I got again one opened post; my HM catalogue in plastig bag was opened. I thought that mail boy maybe wanted to see if there was some clothes for him to order.
I have heard after that many people in my area don´t get their post and money is missing too. But I don´t understand who still sends money by post; it is very unsecure way.

Hello Bonita,
I think you should have reported the opened items to the Post Master, and he could have taken action against hie employee. It looks as though the items in your mail didn't interest the person responsible for opening them, or they wouldn't have been delivered. Thank you fot yous input.

Hi mipen, yes I have had a couple of things vanish in the post.
The first time was many years ago, an article from Belgium never made it out the country.
The last time was just recently, article vanished in US post.
If I ever send money or goods, it is always, with insurance or signature.

Hi VKXY, I agree, and recently I have insured even small amounts of money sent to my grandchildren. I believe these are monitored through the system, so they know who last handled the article, and the cost isn't great. Thanks for your input.

Many times. Mainly on International destination. I was sending mail to my friends in Germany and it was not delivered.
Here locally I experienced some missing mail but not as many, plus with email, most of my letters and cards are electronic....

Hi pola, the programe was about postal workers in Australia, but I think the same would apply anywhere in the world. I use electronic cards, but have five grandchildren thousands of kilometers apart, and usually spil some money in a card for their birthday. Now I'm not sure.

hello mipen2006,
Too bad to know that. It's not really safe to put any valuables at all and mail them in the post office. More so if it is cash. They can open it so easily.
Well as for our experienced, since my wife is the one incharge depositing/withdrawing money for her niece's monthly interest - from her investment, to the bank she was told to withdraw some amount and donate it to the convent. So what she did was called up the convent and asked them how she can give the donation. She was told that they have this P.O. Box in the post office and that she can put it there anytime. So she went to the post office and asked the designated P.O. Box for the Convent after withdrawing money from the bank. After two days or so, she called up again the convent and asked them if they were able to get the money. They said that they went there yesterday and saw nothing in there. So my wife was so angry. And so she decided to see someone from the convent somewhere and replace the money for it was lost. She replaced the money even it's not necessary. That means, even lots of people are renting in the post office thinking that it's safer there is still not safe for they have duplicates. Guess it's still best to keep our valuables at home.

Hello robert,
Your case sounds very cut an dried, someone just helped themselves to the money from the convent's box. Post office boxes are locked in the front, but are just pidgeon holes in the post office, which makes them easily accessable to anyone inside the post office.. Your post has just sent shock waves through my body. With boxes owned by charities, nobody would know how much was taken. If you mail a donation no one is expecting, then it won't be missed, so no one really knows it has been stolen. My god, that could amount to hundreds of thousands. Thanks for your response, robert.

Is this special mail..?
You mentioned TT so I was guessing it should have been very safe..
That's really bad. It hasn't happened to me before.
I think in this instance, it's best to send money through a remittance bank. It is best and safe that way. Do you have Western Union over there..? It might help.
That's bad that money are lost along the way all the time. It is really something alarming and not good at all. I would be concerned too if it happens to me.

Hey zed, no it's not special mail. The report covered mainly birthday and gift cards that often contain money, lottery or scratchie tickets, in other words cash. We can send other ways, but you should be able to trust your post. This is something that needs to be addressed.

Putting cash in the post is not the wisest thing to do unfortunately. I had some loan documents go astray in the mail. We were buying our house and had put an offer on which was accepted subject to our loan going through without a hitch. The bank assured us they could complete the transaction within the week and it would have all happened quickly if it wasn’t for the postal service! After endless phone calls the paper work had to be re-done and I went into the solicitor’s office and picked up the contracts personally.
Two months later guess what arrived in the mail? That’s right our loan papers!
At least this was not a case of dishonesty but negligence!

Hello paula, You're right money shouldn't be mailed unless there is no other way of remitting it. Unfortunately, for special events for the elderly, and the young, sending money, scratchies and lottery tickets are far easier than buying and sending gifts. There also make easy pickongs for dishonest postal workers. In your case, I'm surprised the bank didn't courier the documents to you. Thanks for your time.

i feel sorry for your experience. I also had my post/mail lost, but luckily they were not very important.
i had worked in Royal Mail in the uk for a short period. So i know part of the mailing. I can say some employees are really very responsible. however no doubt some are not. i think mostly your post was lost when it just started the trip.
Because my family members work in mail industry, so i have very good feeling with it. For dealing the post they work very hard and very carefully. however some bad things happen every day. one of my friend lost her passport when she apply new visa in the UK. because she did not keep the evidence and copied her original visa, she was in a big trouble.
So my suggestion is when you post some very important documents better to keep a copy.

Thank you sblossom.
I don't think for a minute that all emploeeys in the postal industry are dishonest, probably only a very small percentage. However, that small percentage gives the industry a bad reputation. If you are sending something like a passport, I would advise insuring it. The cost is minimal. Thank you for taking your time to respond.

Hi lotters,
As this new modern world is ruling on Iternet i don't think that much people are using this postal system to send their cards, documents, money. But this system is still there in rural areas.Recently i too send a document through post to my father in my home town.I pasted proper stamps but till now it is not delivered. As it was not registered post we can't complaint to postal authorities. Its a common of missing letters in our town or in any city.Sometimes it happens.I think most of the people has reduced the use of post as internet came.Transfer of money should be done through bank or cards but not with money order system

Hi zareenalot, you're right the internet is the way forward, but when pensioners send money to grandchildren, this becomes too expensive. I have five grandchildren thousands of miles away, so I usually slip $20 into thein birthday cards. This amount doubles if I do it electronically. Thank you for your reply.

The problem is I have five grandchildren, and it's very difficult to send them presents. For one reason, the cost, and secondly I don't know what they need. Ny family members are thousand of miles apart. I use the Internet for wishes, but for young kids that is not practable. Thanks for your time.

Hello,
yes, I used to last the bill statement during holiday. It is hard but I just know which one i miss and which one I have paid. sometimes I dont do the mail that much, I just go online and do the bill payments, but when it comes to card then I will send with confirmation number. If I have bill with check (large amount of money) I will mail with tracking number as well.
Sometimes, they clam not receive it but then I have prove. It is hard to trust people at the post office so much and I dont really like the service either... they are so rude.

Hey psphacker, that was good news for you, but the bad news is someone, somewhere is pkaying your game without paying for it. This increases insurance, and the retail cost of goods. Thanks for your response.

you can be very sure every time there is money in the mail it is lost. with new technology they can check what is inside. i am not sure about it but i was told there are ex-rays in the post offices now. how true, i cannot be certain.
i have lost some parcels too. i had inserted a gold chain and it didnt reach the person i sent it to.
too bad isnt it? very few honest people in the post office?

Hi tigeraunt, I have heard the same thing about x-ray machines in post offices, but don't know if it is true. Was the chain you sent insured? I wonder what post offices do when they find sn employee stealing. According to the programe, bery little, maybe ask them to resign. Thanks for your input.

I have sent hundreds, if not near one thousand, pieces of mail this year for my sports hobby, and the post office has only lost one piece of mail. But I package my mail well, so that helps. I take great care in shipping my mail, which I believe cuts down on damaged or lost mail.

That's great jeg. The report I saw was more concerned with cards than parcels, and was about Australian Post, but I reckon other postal systems would have similar problems.
