I Want to Steal a Cat

We have a young male cat who has started spending time around our house. He's mostly grown but obviously still a kitten. He's thin, but not boney, and he is wearing a collar, and REALLY friendly, so he must be owned by someone.
BUT he has bad eye infections in BOTH eyes, and BOTH of his ears are filthy and looks like he has ear mites, and he has a icky nose and sneezes a lot.
Whoever owns him is NOT taking good care of him, and I want to take him in and make him OUR cat.
The collar doesn't have a tag on it, and we don't know who it belongs to.
Would it be wrong for me to "steal" the cat?
I mean, to start feeding it, and give it the care it needs and coax it to stay around our house and not go home?

I don't think it's wrong... On my view, you're not stealing the cat because the cat was the one that comes to you... And if someday the owners found and wants its cat to give it back, i'm sure you will give it back the cat... But i doubt that the owners will find the cat because perhaps they already don't care...

Sadly, I think he may have went back to whoever owned him, as before I could make him my own he dissapeared. I only hope they get the poor dear some treatmetn for his eye infections and ear mites.

Chances are the cat is lost and his owners have not been able to find him. Before deciding to completely take him I would call animal control in your area and ask if anyone has reported a cat fitting his description as missing. Then file a found report, and see if anyone responds. If no one responds you will then have legal rights and responsibilities to take pocession of the cat. That is what happened with our cat, we took him in, and no once claimed him so we kept him. But I would give the owners a chance to re-claim him in case he is lost. If no one claims him then you can keep him with a clear concionce (spelling?)

Well, that is a tough question. You are right to be concerned about kitty's care. But think about the person who may be missing the cat. I think you should try to find the owner and talk to the owner. May be the owner cannot afford to keep the cat and would say if you are going to give the cat a good home and get him medical attention, it would be okay for you to keep kitty. I think if you "steal" him, you are always going to wonder if the person was heartbroken over losing kitty or not. You don't have to tell the person where you are or where the kitty is, just see if you can find the owner and talk to the person over the phone. It may all work out if you attempt to find out why the kitty strayed and why he is in such bad shape. Kitty may have strayed because he came to an age where he wanted to go out and look for a girlfriend. That happens with male cats who are not neutered. In the meantime, get the kitty to the vet and/or start treating the eyes and ears. You are a good person to be worried about his health.

PS - Might be good to take kitty where you can find out if he has been microchipped. Sometimes people use that instead of collars and/or tags. You might go to a vet or the animal shelter to see who has a microchip scanner.

My feeling is that anytime you find a neglected animal you need to do what you can, this cat may very well be a stray, in today's world his folks may have had to leave home and just not taken him with them. Anyway if you keep him and someone comes along and wants him back you could always say he was in such bad condition you thought he was abandon.

There are ways to do this the right way, he could have owners that are missing him terribly, but he just go to far from home and couldn't find his way back. Reporting the cat as found is the right thing to do, then if on one claims him she can keep him.

I just realized how long ago this post was created, but hopefully you took the cat in and gave it a good home. More than likely he did have an owner and they probably moved away and left him or he may have gotten lost.
