So all the right wings were all over the Gates arrest why are you all not talking about this? I have said it in several post lately that I have witnessed this and people just think ohhhhhh we have come such a long way. Unfortunately it takes just one idiot to get caught to make the whole department look bad. I personally know Mayor Menino and I am very proud of everything he said. GONE GONE GONE no tolerance of this from anyone working on the police dept. If you do not think this man did many injustices out there are would have to say you are blind. Please read the link I have provided and give your opinion.

Yeah, I read about it. The reason I didn't feel it was worth starting a thread over is that the jerk was immediately fired. Problem found, problem solved. I felt there was nothing to gain by starting a thread over it that would likely lead to some people spouting crap about how all cops are racist because this one jerk happens to be.

Of course racism is an important issue. This case of racism was dealt with quickly and appropriately. If it had been handled poorly, than it would be VERY important to discuss what went wrong. Nothing went wrong here. Did you think this thread would CURE racism or teach someone something they didn't already know? Everyone here is in agreement with the sole exception of one person who considers it a free speech issue. And boo hoo, I'm not going to cry because my post isn't up to your standards.
FYI, I'm not criticizing the person who started this thread, I'm simply answering the question in the subject.

So far your theory is 0/6....racism is a very important issue, and this thread most certainly should have been started, thank goodness it did. I'm glad because it is a deviation from the Obama threads, and is informative. And some people,me for instance, don't take racism so lightly as "problem found, problem solved".

After reading the news article, I can say that I don't agree with the officers remarks but at the same time none of this would have been an issue if Gates hadn't started the whole thing by accusing another upstanding officer of being racist. I don't blame the police officers for being angry about the situation. Their being labeled as racist and stupid and all b/c one officer did his job.
I think the whole thing could have been avoided if Gates had simply showed his ID when asked and not went off like a nutcase on the officer. Now, it's all being swept under the rug, an officer has been fired and Gates and 0bama are wanting it all hushed up so everyone can go back to listening to 0bama try to sell his healthcare program.

So this is Gates fault for this officer losing control? It isnt like Gates called him a racist. Being stupid and one having acted stupid is two different things. It was not swept under the rug it was made a big issue of by everyone on both sides. This is the story that had not hit national news so please tell me what was swept under the rug. There is no room for racist police officers anywhere in the United States peoples rights are taken away if they are not exposed and released.

What I said was that Gates is responsible for the incident becoming what it is. Had he acted like a normal civilized person and just shown his ID and let that be the end of it, none of this would have happened. Instead he stirred up a big pot of sh*t and now can't stand the smell.
By sweeping it under the rug, I am referring to the incident between Gates and Crowley (I believe the officers name is). Now that it is mud on their faces, they want it dropped and everyone to move on...even if neither of them (Gates and 0bama) are willing to apologize for their behavior.
I did say that I don't agree with this other officers remarks...they were rude and unprofessional but I can understand why the police officers there are upset and mad. I think ppl need to step back and think before they start screaming racist.

Gates had every right to accuse crowley of racism. We know that probably not to be the case, and Gates was wrong to assume racial profiling was a factor here, but the fact remains that the police came in, with out a warrant, with out a definitive witness, on to this mans property, determined that he was the owner of the house, determined he was not the burgular, and still they wrongfully arrested him for disorderly conduct. In short, I think that crowley acted stupidly. Clearly, if he had not acted stupidly, this wouldnt have been a big deal, and this may not have even made it in the papers.

I read it and I am disgusted, calling anyone the term that officer used is so derogatory and racist that this officer deserves a swift kick in the a$$ out of the door. It just makes me angry and sad at the same time, and the focus should NOT be on Gates in this situation and no one should make excuses for this officer, he said what he said of his own free will, and what he chose to say was horrible and offensive, so he deserved the punishment that he got.

For some people they seem to think that he should have to break the law to lose his job I find that soooooooooo blinded.

the officer had no right to write that in a email and yes one bad apple can spoil another so yes the mayor did what he should have done i would be proud of him as well , the officer should not just be suspend he should be kicked off the force for that , i must admit this is the first time i heard of this , but no one has any right to call someone that expecialy a cop knowing he has to stand up for every one reguardless of color, race or anything its his job .

I haven't seen much about this anywhere. I don't know about the "right wings" not being all over it; I would think the "left wings" would be all over it too.
I would think Gates would cite this as the actual racism and maybe forgive Crowley to go after a real racist. I would think President Obama could step up and say that this officer, with a blatantly racist email, acted stupidly.
But as far as this officer doing "many injustices," the article doesn't say anything about that, does it? Am I missing some of it (the page is slow loading)?
He wrote a racially charged email. And while it's disgusting, it's a far cry from going out and racially profiling African-Americans, abusing his power, etc.
If his punishment is to be let go from the force, so bet it. That's up to them. I don't really disagree. I mean, sure, we do have freedom of speech. But any grown man or woman in America today knows that racism and bigotry will get you way in over your head.

Would he use this same term with his family? I think not the going back to your roots made it aimed towards all African Americans not just this one man. I am white and to see that saying I would interpet it as this cop hates black people. If he doesnt want to be seen in this light he should have kept his fingers to himself. I do not trust him and the mayor did what was right as far as I am concerned let others know and set a example out of him.
