Is it hard to find a job nowadawys? Recession?

My friend wants to apply another job but it seems that he is impossible to do so because nobody wants to hire her. You know, he submitted resumes to 50 companies already until now can't find a good one. Is it because of recession? or is because of the hard to find jobs? or lack of experience? what do you think?
