The issue is this.Suddenly my computer crashed and could not be operated. Earlier, it was getting slow but one fine day this happened. Now, I did not want to go to the company service centre because they are very beauracratic ,it is difficult getting any message across and very expensive too.i have done what I could in good faith. I checked with an acquaintance of mine and had a service engineer [ a person who knows assembling and is also a dealer in computers]have alook at it.He cleaned up the ram and said that my antivirus was not functioning and he installed another.I had to scan the comp[he asked me to do it]and the comp shut down immediately. However, I restarted it and it was working yesterday.Today, I open it and it is still slow but it is functioning. The name of the antivirus installed is some PEClassic.Have you heard of this? THe man charged 350 rupees as visiting charges and antivirus is charged separately.I do not know how long this will last and I am keeping my fingers crossed. However,I do have his phone number and he c an be contacted immediately. Now my questions are 1HaVE YOU HEARD OF THis ANTIVIRUS?-IS IT OK? 2.What would be the cost of a new ram?[a 512] 3.Should I install some other antivirus while the comp is still in order? 4.Do you think the man is reliable?[he did not give any real explanation for the computer deciding to go offscreen except that there was an expiry of the earlier installed antivirus . My ram is 256 .Do you think I should upgrade it and in that case what would be my cost? This place is an exploitative city and if we are slightly new to something people just take us for a ride. Dear friends, Thanks in advance. Please do share your knowledge and experience.

Hi Kala! I think that you should get your RAM upgraded to 512MB so that you could get better speed and memory on your PC. It should cost you around Rs.600 to Rs.800/-. I've not heard the name of the anti-virus which you have mentioned. I've AVG free anti-virus (which comes free, when down loaded) and it works fine with my home PC and it also keeps getting updated, when my internet remains on. Also please perform the function called 'Disk clean up', which you can do, if you open your Drive 'C' and 'D' in your computer. Also keep deleting 'cookies' from your PC, by pressing tools, then Intenet option, then the option - delete cookies. I think, it will enhance the speed of your PC. Best of Luck!

Honestly, it sounds like your computer is painfully outdated and I can't guarantee that upgrading the RAM from 256 to 512 will make any noticeable difference. It may be time to consider purchasing a new machine. If your anti-virus program is Avira, then yes, it's a good anti-virus although I find it a bit annoying. I myself use Avast Free anti-virus.

Thank you for the particpation and sharing your experience. My computer is just three years old[2+10 months to be precise] and I AM not aware of the duration of a computer..However,i heard thta the standardised RAM is 512 these days. Shall struggle with it as long as it lasts, because though mine is active through the day , there is another laptop of my son which can be used for emergencies, when he is in station.

Do you mean "Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic" if so, it's a very reliable and free anti-virus tool, although there is also a paid version that has more features that most users would not need. You should also install SpyBot and ensure that its realtime scanner is active - it sounds like you may have malware running in the background. Did the technician check that the CPU fan spins correctly and that the PSU is supplying enough current on the lines? Another possibility is that of hard errors on the harddisk which is very likely on older computers...

As of previous experiences, this is happening to your PC due a malfunctioning POWER SUPPLY That may be causing the mainboard to malfunction, and every other parts could be affected too. So instead of buying more ram, Get a new power supply! :) Hope this helps Btw, best free antivirus is avg.
