It is reported from Lucknow that Police has arrested 10 Engineering Students of Benaras Hinu University on charges of ragging their juniors. They were caught red handed by anti ragging squad while they ragging first year engineer students. The Varsity slapped a fine of Rs.50 thousand each and suspended them for 15 days. Is there ragging in your country? Can we justify the fine of Rs.50 thousand.

I'm guessing ragging is another word for hazing...making someone perform a task that they wouldn't ordinarily do, that might be humiliating or harmful...or even illegal, as a basis for their inclusion in a group? I think people tend to get hazing confused with bonding or team building. If the whole group is participating, members alongside potential members, then it's a bonding experience.
We used to have Greek kidnappings, where a group of members from one of our organizations would "kidnap" a member of one of the other organizations and hold them for ransom. The ransom lists were always stupid things like a straw from a fast food restaurant that had the name of the restaurant printed on the wrapper...occasionally the "hostage" would add things for themselves to the list like a soda or, one girl asked for a Big Mac from McDonalds. But then someone severely lacking in a sense of humor decided that these kidnappings were hazing activities and made us stop. Nevermind that half the time it was the potential members kidnapping the actives.
So as far as a fine...I say as long as everyone participating is willing and no one got hurt a fine is ridiculous and should be fought.

Hi....ladybug
Thank you for your response. What we are describing is a harmless activity. This looks like really fun, which can be enjoyed by all. But the ragging in Indian Universites are uncivilized. The senior students will really harass or torture the new entrants to the campus. Some of the activities are stripping, compell to drink urine, demanding heavy amount. We will doubt whether they have really educated and what they will deliver after completing their education ?
Wish you many happy days ahead!!!!
