Can you truly enjoy life if others are suffering?

I've heard people say that they cannot enjoy a meal knowing others are starving?
What is your definition of JOY or ENJOY? Can you take pleasure in life while knowing others are suffering? What about those such as Mother Theresa who gave up all pleasure to serve those who were suffering, why do you think she did this? And was it sincere? What motivated her, do you think?

I don't like to see anyone suffering. I don't like it that anyone suffers. Still I enjoy life immensely.
Knowing that God will one day rectify the situation and make it up to those that have suffered so much makes me look forward to better things.

I'm ok, thanks! Nice to see you back.
While it is true that there is much suffering because of free will, free will does not cause the suffering, it is the misuse of free will and making the wrong choices that result in suffering.
I have the free will to jump off a cliff. But I will only hurt myself if I jump off the cliff.
However, a lot of suffering is caused by genetics and our environment over which we have little control. If a violent snowstorm unexpectedly hits where we are, there is not much we can do to avoid it.
Again, the hope is that in the not too distant future, God will right all wrongs and make things better. That hope, helps us rejoice in spite of sufferings, which are temporary.

Hi hopefulman, what many don't realize is that it is free will in man that brings on the suffering; if we wanted a truly carefree world, we'd have to give up our FREE WILL and have NO CHOICE in our lives.
God bless, how've you been doing lately?

When it comes to family, it is very difficult to enjoy life when you see them suffering. You learn to keep going, but their suffering is always in the back of your mind. People sometimes think you are the depressed one, the mean one, the unfriendly one, because the sadness always comes thru even when you are trying to not to show them; but, unfortunately it is always in the back of your mind, and can never truly enjoy life, until your family is okay.

As a side note on Mother Theresa..I believe she had a calling from God, and it was most sincere. It was a difficult task that she willingly undertook, because of the strong faith that she had. I also believe that God gave her the graces to do what she did.
Not everyone will get this calling, therefore will find it difficult to do as she did.

Yes, I am reading her book now...she does at one point doubt the existence of God, which is what caused some controversy when they were trying to elevate her to Sainthood. But what christian has not had doubts. We would certainly be gullible to believe that nobody has experienced that. So, I say "hats of to her" for never giving up and just having the faith to trust that he was there for her.

Thank you sweetchariot...and I agree with you about Mother Theresa. I did read though that she had her moments of doubt...but didn't give up. Which I admire even more. She continued on despite the doubt and in the end her faith was all the stronger. To many times we humans quit...when the slightest doubt comes to mind. We would do well to continue and reap the full reward.

Your life is your life, well unless if you have attached your self to someone else through marriage and having children. Your enjoyment is based on your life and no one else. If someone else is starving I am not going to start starving, what is the point. If someone like Mother Theresa want to suffer as much as the most sufferable human then that is what they choose. Their motivation is their own based on their own views of the world. My motivation is to enjoy life to the fullest how I deem it to be enjoyed. I will keep eating how ever much I want and enjoy ever bite of it.

Do you think about what you can do to stop the starving of others? Is it our duty to help those who truly need our help? Or is that just a choice as well, to help?

Mother Theresa is one of my heros in life. She is a great human being. Her heart is truly made in the image of our Lord and Savior.

Hey,
Well I think that I could enjoy life, but I would always think about those people who are suffering out their in the world. I would do as much as I can in order to help those poor people, the ones who have no food. Make sure you have a good day, God bless and Happy Lotting!!

If everyone did what they could....Jesus said we'd always have 'the poor' with us. What did he mean? He meant that until the world is cleansed of evil...there would be suffering. And if His followers showed His love and compassion it would overcome that evil.

when i know others are suffering i feel sad. I want to help them. But the fact is that what i can do is so little. There are too many people who need help. Sometimes it's not meaningful to just mourn. It's not an effective way.

Jesus told a story of an old widow. She gave her last few pennies...she was praised more than the rich man who gave more...but NOT ALL. It is in doing what we CAN do...that God blesses.
Thanks for your response.

Hi, Debrak!
I believe Mother Theresa was sincere. I know the suffering of others really bother me, and I couldn't enjoy my life if I didn't know I do all I can to help. I have very little money, but I give all I can. I have very little time, but I give all I can. To me, that's a normal and necessary part of life. I can absolutely see her point, and why she was willing to give up a rather posh lifestyle and do all she did.

That made me think of the paraple of the widow's mite. She was praised by the savior when she gave a few pennies. Yet the rich man who gave some was not praised...he only gave a very small part of what he had. She gave all she had.

Hello debracarey ,I share the common feeling with you ,in the world we live together ,there are indeed a host of people living in poverty ,even though there most basic need goes unmet ,they need help ! What si forturnate is that at each of the period of history ,there are always some great and compassionate people who would like to lend a helping hand ,it is their devotion and sacrifice that made the world a beautiful place ! So I think everyone should not be a person who are just selffish and distressed of compassion ,because the sympathy in the ottoms of people's hearts could and would be the backbone of the era !

The salt of the earth is how the Lord called those who have such compassion. They are th ones who hold off the judgement of God....by their goodness.

I do not think I can enjoy life to the fullest if I know someone is suffering because of me. I can can say that life is full of hardships and pain to make us stronger and better.
As for Mother Teresa, I am really a fan of her since she was able to give up everything she has in life to serve and love those who are less fortunate and she really lived a true example of a life lived within the commandments of GOD, our Divine Creator.

we can still enjoy despite the fact that others are suffering..but if we try to think things out, it was never our fault why they are suffering, some of them suffers because of their own laziness, while some maybe suffering because of the greedy people around..the best thing we can is not to blame ourselves just because some lives are miserable because it was never our choice, they have their choice of living a good life but chooses not to because of reasons we don't understand, we just have to extend our help to those people who we think needs them the most, and thats it, we can enjoy our lives by sharing with those less fortunate people what they are having..we should lend a hand not just to those who really needs us but lend a hand to everyone, regardless if they need us or not, as long as we are offering our sincere arms for them to embrace with, then i think, it should be ok..

I think if we give with a pure heart, God honors it. Even if the person we help was lazy or made bad choices.

It takes a very special person like Mother Theresa, to sacrifice her better life for others that were suffering. I have not found that spirit in me, but I do feel that it is our responsibility to help those that are less fortunate than we are. For sure, we cannot help everyone who is in dire need. We can, however, donate, volunteer our services and/or time. If I tried to do nothing to help others then I may have a problem enjoying a good life.

Just think if everyone did what they could. We are not expected to feed the entire hungry world...just our neighbor...the people God brings into our lives that need our help. you are right....if we don't try, how can we enjoy our lives?

Well how to say here. If i cann't enjoy a meal knowing other are starving then all my life will be at the starving status because there are too many starving people around the world . i do appreciate what Mother Thereesa has done for this world and she was born to do that , i think .

If you feed the hungry person next to you...the one God shows you, it is the same as feeding the LORD. That is all He asks....that we do what we can.
Mother Theresa was called to do that very thing.

Well, you know, the world we live now is full of unequal things and unfairness exesit in everywhere all the time. But everyone owns his/her own life, you can't hate your life just because of others are suffering. Acturely, we all enjoy our lives when others are suffering, you know, there are still so many people in someplaces can not eat enough food now, but we yet still can enjoy our lives.

There is a lot of unfairness in the world. But we do not have to turn our back on those in need, that is just contributing to the unfairness. Don't you think?

It's possible to enjoy life and at the same time have compassion for somebody else's suffering. As for mother Theresa, she was a far better person than I will ever be. But did she really give up all pleasure? After all, many people derive pleasure from helping others.

You have a point there. I suppose she did gain some pleasure from helping others.
