I'm trying to self-teach myself Korean. And it is NOT as easy as it seems.
I manage to get the numbers and all right. But to be able to remember the strokes, now that is a tall order.
What about you?
Have you ever tried to learn a new language by yourself? Were you successful? Or did you give up?

I have a bit. I always give up too easily. Its very hard with no help at all, because you never know how to pronounce things. I think if you get Cd's or something that teach you how to learn it, that makes it so much easier! Although they are very expensive for good quality ones!

Hi regal_aeros,
We need a teacher to learning a language. Learning a language need us to do a lot of practice in writing and speech. Writing maybe not a problem but speech is. You can say you know that language until someone how familiar and/or speak that language can conform it. Using all kind of learning aid would not help you much. You may think that you can pronounce it correctly but it is not correct for the native speaker.
You had to have a trainer to guide you. You need a real person and not tape or video in learning a language. He/she can correcting you on the spot if you do something wrong. And you need it. And you also need to practice it and you can't do it with a tape or video.
I try to learn mandarin before but I quit have way because I really can do it without help from some one. My English speaking also not as good as my writing. I can write something but I can't pronounce it correctly. And I prefer to write then speak in English. But if I want to learn it, I have to speak in English with someone who are good in it and they can help me on this.
Good luck and have a nice day.

I learn English also a long time, but when I go philippines, I found I can't speak, and I only can write. My teacher told me:" Don't worry about your speak, your should worry about you can understand others. because others mother language is English, even your English is not good, they still can understand you, but if you can't understand others, that's your problem, at that situation you can't communication with other people." I found my teacher's word is really work, now I can communicate with other people no problem. So I think you can study a language with video and tape, when you go another country you only need a little time to practise.
happy mylot!

What your teacher said have a point. You need to understand others before you can give a response. How if they can't understand what we are talking about? Miss communication?
If we are live in foreign country, we can easily learn their language because we speak to them frequently? When you are first time arrived there, do you have any miss communication? Do they understand you?
How if you are not going anywhere? You just at your home and suddenly there is foreigner come to you and ask something from you. Can you give them a correct answer or direction?
And you are totally not do that if you are talking to professional or businessmen. A proper language a crucial when we talk to businessmen. Slight mistake may cost you a business.
I still prefer to learn from a person when it comes to learn a languages.
Happy mylotting and have a nice day.

I have started learning French.I have always loved the language and I had some French colleagues. So then I used to try and pick the language up from them. But now that I don't have any French people working with me, my exposure to French has reduced. But I am still trying my best to learn the language.Love for the language won't let me give up.
Good luck in learning Korean.

i learned Japanese for a year in my university . After my graduation i did want to continue to study it and even i went to a Japanese company to work for two years. But i feel very shame about myself that my Japanese doesn't improve much. It's really hard to stick to learning a foreign language indeed .

I learned English all by myself. I didn't set as a goal to learn English and I didn't do it in an organized way - I just picked it up from TV. I also learned some Spanish and Italian like that, but it as much easier, as my native language (Romanian) is closely related to Spanish, Italian and French.
I didn't have the chance to study English in school until my first year of high school, when I was directly placed in an advanced English class (because I was following informatics classes). In school I studied French and Russian...
I think my English is good enough right now.
I once had in mind to teach myself Japanese... I gathered some materials, but I couldn't find the time to do it. I only know a few words from the anime series.

I am studying Russian by myself. At the first I borrowed some books and some tapes at the library, and I got through the first chapters, but then it got too difficult. I was a bit disappointed in the book, because the author has forgotten to translate some of the words and that made it too difficult to understand the sentences. I returned the books and decided to use the internet instead. I have found a very good site, where I can look at the pictures and listen to the words at the same time. I am using that site now, and it is a great way to learn new words.

Hi, yes once I tried to learn Spanish, it is not that difficult but I only learned some basics but still remember them after years have passed and can understand conversations. I wish I could learn some other language like Greek, Bulgarian or chinese but those different signs and I think they;re very difficult to learn.

well, its so easy to learn and remember those words out of your own but the problem is, did i pronounce it well? some words share the same spelling but have different meaning depends on the way you stressed the word. so i guess, self teaching isnt recommended, i rather want to watch movie and copy what they are saying so that i will know how to pronounce the words correctly.

Anyoonggg!! I love Korean, I learn a little Korean here and there, but I havent reached your stage yet (I cant write Korean), Anyway, I tried to self-teach myself Mandarin before, but I failed, haha.. its really complicated, as you said, same with Korean, its really hard to memorize which stroke first and which direction it should go.. I can read a little, but to write.. I can only write probably less than 30 words in Chinese.. Anyway, just a personal opinion, but really, you shouldn't give up :) all the best and aja aja fighting!!
