guilty or not guilty?

A man driving his car met an accident, his friend who was also in the car, died while he, was seriously injured but alive.And because it was a sport car it was said that car was running so fast, and also before the accident happened he was issued a ticket for speeding. Now the family of his friend is charging him in the court for the death of his friend.The question is, is he liable for the death of his friend, even if it is an accident that no one wants to happen? I don't know much of the law, so I was asking this question.
