Cat died after eating pistascios

I am going on the weekends to adopt my kittens. A couple weeks ago a couple came in and said that they had just lost their cat. He was about 1 year old. He had eaten some pistacios in the shell, just a few of them. He threw up most of them but one went down in his intestines. They took him to vet and vet thought there was just feces in the intestine but it turns out there was a pistacio and it caused a blockage. They lost the kitty, sadly. Just to warn everyone out there, cats and kittens and even puppies and doggies can get into all kinds of things that can harm or kill them. Everyone needs to be aware of this and don't leave anything out where they can get into it and have whatever it is cause them harm or worse yet, death. Very sad but yet a warning that has to be passed on.

It's sad to say but often people will be sticklers for baby proofing a home when a baby is born, but don't think twice about pet proofing, even simple things people never think of...like at christmas time..My Christmas trees I have do look rather strangely decorated, since I don't have the usual decorations on a tree...like tinsel, glass ornament balls, etc that could cause harm to a pet...also I avoid toys for cats that have small bells (or at least take them off)--feathers, etc--and nothing with hanging strings where a cat could chew on them and they get stuck in their throats

As a PS--I'm even careful what kind of cleaners I use...which are "green" ones like baking soda, white vinegar, lemons--yes that's it and does the job every bit as well as chemical harsh toxic cleaners

Once again, a great post. Very informative. You are so right about the Christmas stuff and also the cleaners and cleansers. If think even if you wash the floor with something harsh and let it dry, there is still residual stuff that the cats walk on and then lick their paws. It is very scary to think of all the things we expose them to. I just had a friend tell me that the liquid flea stuff, especially the cheap stuff, like Hartz, ? possibly Advantage, etc. can be harmful to cats. I know a lot of people use this stuff and I hope it is not true because it really does work (not the Hartz) but the Advantage, etc. It is a long process to flea comb and also a painstaking process to give kitties a flea bath. We do have to keep ourselves aware of these things and remind others about these things. We want to protect our babies from harm at all cost.

What a sad story! Oh how I feel for the owners but gosh, I'm sure they didn't mean for it to happen. I agree though, to be very careful in what they can get into because the poor things don't know any better. We have to do all the thinking for them in order to keep them safe. I don't feed my cats anything but cat food, 9-lives at that as well as can cat food that lists the ash at 3.5% or lower. The lower ash content is good for their urinary tract.

Poor kitty. A friend of a friend lost his dog last week because he fed him pork bones, and a splinter got stuck in its intestines.

aww i'd never known a cat to eat nuts..that's weird. although my calico tries to steal those strawberry candies. i finally banned them from the house for fear of that happening.

It is sad that the couple lost their cat because of one little pistachio. It is so true that if you're not careful, pets could get into alot of things that are dangerous and harmful, i was watching a show about a couple who was trying to get their dog to stop countersurfing because of how dangerous it could be.
