I know being from the US it's been very common place during the last 50yrs+ that it acceptable for us Ladies to wear pants.
I"m a lil saddened that someone would get lashings for wearing what feels comfortable to them. I know I"m of "Western" thinking, but really it's pants... it's not like she did anything criminal, they are just pants! I understand that it's also a cultural law and such rules should be respected. I find it a little sad that Women today in other nations are being brutally lashed ect for such minor offenses.
I am glad I live here where I can wear what I want and I won't be punished for something out of the ordinary other than someone staring or pointing or comenting on what I'm wearing.
I hope she wins her case if not to break this rule but the harsh punishment inflicted for an "offensive" wardrobe.

Hi snugglebunnies, I'm interested in the cultural issue you raised here. I believe that foreigners should respect the laws and rules of other cultures so dress accordingly so as not to cause offence. However when the women within these countires themselves do not believe the the rules they are conditioned to live under are right then it is good that they begin to challenge these traditions and show their independence against these man made laws. If the women in their own country don't believe that the law is right they should be applauded for challenging it and bringing attention to these archaic punishments.

I agree, if they choose to live in the UK they should try to integrate more into the culture. Some of them choose to wear Burka type dress into English offices which can cause unease as they appear to be making a statement by what they wear which is not appropriate in that environment.

my mom never allowed me to wear pants ... until i was 19, i got a pay from part time job and bought my first 'jeans ' ... everyday i wore that jeans ... and started to collect them, then my elder sister started to wear jeans too ...
My mother finally gave up .. as she realised, wearing pants/jeans was better then skirts which goes flying when we are on the cycle or motorcycle
Now other than office wear i only have my lovely jeans for all my activities ... Only for religious activities i wear Indian Salvar Kameez - even that is same as wearing pants ..
If my mother in law in around then i am forced to wear Sarees
So i am never ever going to Sudan ..
cheers

We have a lot of Indian customers at my store and I love the Sarees & other outfits they wear many are very lovely. Though I can see how it can become cumbersome to wear depending on the activity and how hot it is outside.

A long time ago the law prohibited them from wearing trousers on the. I think such a law is very strange However, I should respect a country's laws, although he in violation of human rights and freedom.

I guess the men there are just so bad at controlling themselves that they have to make laws like that. They can't see a woman clothed as we are because they couldn't control their lust. That must be it, because all those laws we hear about-women can't leave the house without a male relative, wearing those voluminous get-ups and covering the face, etc.-are meant to hide a woman, probably for fear the uncontrollable men would jump on her like a flea on a dog. Those men are worse than animals because even an animal controls their mating to the females' cycles.

I totally agree with you! Men just will not sit there and think...well maybe the problem is me and not her. maybe i have the issues and need the lashings. Yeah right. They will not. I feel sooo sorry for those women and i wish they would all ban together and change those stupid laws. Thats what American women did. They fought for equal rights and won.

I agree this is an archaic rule, and that lashing women is against human rights laws. The reason everything on this planet is suffering is because things like this occur. There are much bigger problems than a woman wearing pants.
We can never get ahead in life if we don't allow equality, and we, as a human culture, let things like this happen. She did not commit a crime, as you had stated, she just dressed, covering her entire legs no less.
Thanks to those who could attend her court with signs in her support.

i agree, i understand if its cultural and its against the culture or the religion to wear pants but being lashed for it is a little extreme to me. I am also glad i have the freedom to wear what i want and not be punished.

This really puzzles me, as the Islamic Code demands that women don't show flesh, including arms or legs, so why ban something which hides legs. I'm sure I read somewhere that allow pants or trousers are not appropriate, this law is normally not enforced for foreigners.

my grandmother told me a long time ago there was still a law on the books in ohio banning women from wearing pants..never stopped her, however
it is ridiculous though.there are some chores i can't imagine doing effectively in a skirt.like hand washing the floor.i'd spend more time worrying if my butt is showing than to get anything done.
