what's the big deal with bottled water?

I have noticed a lot of people will spend a ton of extra money to buy bottled water from grocery stores. Is this because people are afraid of tap water? Or maybe it's the convenience of having a bottle to take with you during a busy day? I bought a water filter for my faucet in my apartment and I fill up my own bottles. It's much cheaper and I think it's healthier as well. Bottled water doesn't have the fluoride needed to keep our teeth protected from cavities.
What's your preference with water and why?

I'm not really sure on that one. I bought a recycled water bottle from where i work when i got paid the first time and just been filling that up for work. I pretty much finish it too over the course of a work day....but man do i have to go to the bathroom when i do. Kudos to you for not using plastic bottles like that. its probably laziness...they just want to grab and go and not worry about the environmental ramifications. but that's my opinion. I know thats pretty strong but that's what I'm thinking

I've noticed that too that so many use the bottled water. I only ever buy it once in a while, like when I'm on a trip and finding a water fountain isn't convenient. I have a water filter at home, where I have well water. For the bottled water, I don't like drinking it because it's in a plastic container, and who knows how much of the plastics chemicals leach out?! From what I've read, the bottled water is often just plain old tap water anyways lol. So much cheaper just to use a thermos, or a canteen filled with my own water, then to spend exhorbatent prices for bottled. I guess I will always prefer my own water, the well it comes from gets it's water from an underground stream about 80 feet deep. It is pure, clean, cold, and tastes great and refreshing!

I miss drinking well water... so much better than any other source... the camp I used to go to used to get their water from a well, but they changed their system and now they get it from the lake and fill it with chlorine.
If I had access to a well, I'd drink tap water... but for now I like my bottled water, you just have to read the label and make sure you know where it's coming from. And the plastic isn't bad unless you leave it in the sun for hours on end... like the a few years ago when people were freaking out over the nalgene bottles. They're perfectly fine so long as you don't let them heat up.

I think people think it's convenient to buy bottled water when they feel thirsty outside. But some people think that bottled water are cleaner. Actually I have read an article via the net and said it is not good to drink bottled water all the time. We boil the tap water and then drink it at home. Usually I will carry a bottle of water from home and then we don't have to spend money to buy it outside.
I love China

The filter is a great idea, especialy economically. When I get my own place again, I will probably do the same thing. However, until then I will drink bottled water. I am careful to read the label and make sure it is from a spring and not from a public water supply!! The way we "doctor" the tap water is not good for us. There is chlorine in it.. like what they put in the pool to kill germs and such! then the flouride may help your teeth somewhat... (which I would like to see the studies that confirm that)... but it's really not good for your body and you are ingesting it... I'll take the purified water over that!!

i do like to boil tap water for myself likewise, though i cant spend money buying many bottled water from grocery stores as that may be a waste of money though i don't blame such people because they are concerned very much about their health, rather i do believe they can boil tap water if they are unsure of their health safety

I think it is okay when you used the tap water but you boiled it when you drink it.We used this tap water daily, until now we don't get any harm from using it.It is safe to use.

I do buy some bottle water but not often...but I also do not like the taste of our tap water whatsoever. I bought a water filter pitcher and it does taste a lot better. Where I'm from, we grew up with well water, that definitely didn't taste good so my mom bought water bottles and a water purifier for us kids to drink the water because we wouldn't drink it unless it tasted good.

I think it started out as a 'yuppie" thing... the cool professional... just a really cool thing to have a bottle of water in your hand.. made one look cool and with it.
Not to mention a richy look - "I got a bottle of water in my hand..ain't I the coolest, aren't you jealous of me cause I buy water! Tap water isn't good enough for me! I am so worth bottled water!".
Now..they tell us tap water is better and more healthy than bottled as bottled doesn't have to pass the tests that municipal water does. And now the plastic is an issue of being safe as far as how long the water can stay in the plastic bottle and what the plastic gives off to the water it holds.
When I moved to Texas... we had well water.. actually had an underground water well from an underground apring... it tasted horrid and even had an odor.... but after 3 months... funny.. it didn't smell and it tasted just fine!!! We were used to city water with all the additives and such... now we were drinking water straight out of the steam!
I buy a case and put 6-8 in the fridge... and when they are emptied.. I rinse and refill with tap water... as long as it is cold.. I can't even taste a difference. But warm tap water tastes the same as warm bottled water. I refill the bottles 6-8 times and then toss them just for sanitary issues.. just in case.

Tap water is really not good for you, filtered water is better for you. bottled water is filtered. and if you check into fluoride you will find out that it is not a real good thing for us. I do not even believe that it is good for our teeth, but it certinally is not good for us.

For a while my partner and I had to stick with drinking bottled water. This is because in the area we were living, the chlorine and fluoride content in the water was on the higher side.High fluoride and chlorine is not good for the teeth,or health for that matter. So as most of the people in our living community were buying bottled water we started doing that too. After a while, we decided to buy water that was available in canisters. In a while we shifted residence and the whole water issue was settled.lol

I filter my water, and then I distill it. Distilling it builds it back to its natural state of hyrdrogen and oxygen after it becomes steam.
Flouride is actually terrible for you. I have included a link below, which goes into detail about it. It shows that flouride causes higher rates of cavities, osteoporosis, cancers, all sorts of health problems.
It even shows the history behind it, and how this is a conspiracy, used as a benefit for aluminum companies, effectively, given them kickbacks for poisoning our water streams. Very important read.

Oh, another thing: I remember watching the news where someone had actually lit their water on fire. The took a lighter under the running water, and all the chemicals going through it caught fire. Would you really want to ingest that?

i used to drink water from deep well when i was still in elementary, and the taste is very natural and delicious compared to a distilled water.. but when i was in high school my parents decided to change our way of drinking and that's the time we used to drink a distilled water because it is much safer according to them..

I like to drink bottled water because it's been cleaned already and filtered. but it would have been alright if we had our own purifier so that we can have our water filtered clean. i don't like buying water forever, surely i will have what they have soon. i have no time to check with bottled water, as long as they are clean.

we do buy bottled water once in awhile just when its on sale. our local schools are hoping to ban the use of water bottles in the schools so we went out and bought a aluminum water bottle for each of our daughters (they were at walmart [canada] for $5- each).

let me put it this way, why would you pay for tap water in a bottle? I would buy tap water if it was my only choice for fluids, but you would still be drink traces of lead, phosperhus, etc.

I drink bottled water, tap water and filtered water from my refridgerator. Bottled water is notorious for not being monitored as closely by the FDA.
"NRDC's study included testing of more than 1,000 bottles of 103 brands of bottled water. While most of the tested waters were found to be of high quality, some brands were contaminated: about one-third of the waters tested contained levels of contamination -- including synthetic organic chemicals, bacteria, and arsenic -- in at least one sample that exceeded allowable limits under either state or bottled water industry standards or guidelines."

I really don't know why I still buy bottle water I heard that bottle water is not as purified as we think. Yet, I have a habit of buying it. When I go places I do take a bottle of water with me. Maybe, I should as well get a filter because it would be cheaper. I thing bottle water is like the new trend. People buying it like crazy. On the news they did say that if you need to save money stop buying bottled water.

I like bottled water because it's convenient, but also because it tastes better... no chlorine, no old pipe taste... and since moving for school, I've hated tap water even more, because my school is in a mining city and the water tastes like metal.
Really, if you keep an eye out for sales or go to places like costco it doesn't cost very much, and I think it's worth the price.

i am one of those people that buy bottle water, and i think the reason i do is because i never even thought about putting a filter on the faucet and it crossed my mind a few days ago but i figured it would be a hassle to put it on so i forgot about it. Maybe i should try it.
