Should young people have to do some form of military or community service by law

I understand how people think this is a good thing, it gives young people dicipline and direction but it is also teaching to kill which is not in everyones makeup so I think there should be another option, maybe a choice of military service or social service, I think actually working in areas of compassion and caring could very well be affective, such as working with the elderly, I volunteered in a nursing Home for six years after my mother passed away and i can honestly say it made me a better person, I know I could not even imagine myself training in a military way...everyone is made of different tolerance...
