I have a tendancy to retain song lyrics pretty easily. I often amaze myself by being able to sing along with songs that i didn't even know i had ever heard before. It must be a subconscious thing for me, as i am hearing music all day long where i work. I htink the reasn songs from your teenage years may stick in your head more is just because of the amount of time a lot of teens spend listening to music. I know that i almost always had the radio going at that age, whether i was in my car, hanging our with friends, or sitting at home doing homework.

Most of the songs I remember were the ones that were played constantly, over and over, until you couldn't stand it any more.

I don't think I ever actually learned the songs intentionally as much as I love to sing along with them so I followed the words to them. What's funny is even 20 years later, I can put a song on and after a minute or two, I can sing along with it...funny how some things stick in your brain.

I tend to remember a lot of songs; maybe because I love music, I don’t know. I equate certain songs with different periods of my life. If I hear certain lyrics it can bring me back to a certain era, including smells, feelings etc. It can be very nostalgic to go as far back as your teens through music.

Hello Pat. There are a number of songs from my teens to which I do remember the words. These are usually the songs that I listened to over and over again or had a very special significance to me. I think that is why I do remember them.

going back a few years back and getting nostalgic eh, pat?
you will remember not just the song and its lyrics but all the memories of being young.
there are so many songs today being sang in a different manner. we call them here as revivals. but the lyrics are the same so we always can relate to it.
thank you and have a nice day.

Those songs were probably the background music to your life. Playing in the fast food joint. On the movies. Maybe on the radio as you cruised Main Street with friends or boyfriends. Your friends had them on cassettes (if you are my age) or the radio. The last time I was at my brother's house he got out the collection of 45's he and his wife had had as teens. I could sing along with a lot of them. Brother and sister in law are both a bit younger than I am, and I remember the songs from my older sister's era as well. Like I said, they were the background to many formative times in your life. If we were to get pseudo scientific, because I cannot pinpoint any studies that say this, I am extrapolating from other subjects, you listened to this music when you were forming many motor neuron connections.

Hi, Pat!
Is it just me, or are there several that get into my mind and just won't go away? Maybe we were just more interested in those words then, than we are now. I could do very well without most of today's songs!

Pat-
We were discussing this in my last course believe it or not. They are memes and they can be as simple as song lyrics that become "stuck" in our head. They are anything we give energy to. So, in your teens you probably gave a lot of attention to those songs, and thus they became a part of your memory. There more then likely wasn't any real reason for memorization such as a talent show or what not, but more likely that they just played on the radio quite a bit.
