Well, you don't give much details on what kind of person you are. Are you a gamer? A work at home entrepreneur? An everyday person? With the info you gave me, I highly doubt you will find something of good use under $600, which usually means in stores $599. For a typical laptop that you want to last expect something in the rang of $700 to $1000, for a sizable RAM, disk space, and a good processor. An ideal laptop right now ( excluding video card) would be a price range of $600- $800, for something average, but not too cheap in materials nor too expensive. If you really want it under $600, then you have to build it yourself. If you want something somewhat good and fit your needs, call up your local pc shop and ask how much a custom laptop cost.

I recently bought a new netbook from acer which costs less than $400.it has an atom processor,1.6ghz,1 gb ram,web cam and blue tooth.A dvd writer is missing as to increase the battery backup.they say it will come upto 8 hours. But using it now,I can't say more than 6 hours. At your budget that will be a good choice.

You may consider to but a ASUS EEE PC laptop. A Dell miniseries 10 laptop also has a good deal and hardwares.

i think if you want an affordable laptop then acer or compaq are the best, you can also go for HCL laptops.

I think it all depndes on what kind of laptop and what it has on it. I really don't know all that much aoubt goes into a laptop, but you could have one custom built as that might be the bet way to go. Mine only cost me $550. and I can't really tell you what it has on it, but it is a nice laptop for the money. I do know that it has 3 gig of memory, which is nice to have. It is supposed to be a big hard drie, but I think they make it more than wht it really is. It is supposed to be a 320gig, but it is nowhere near that size. It is only a little over 200gig. It has an ATI video card in it but I like nvidia better. Take care, and happy mylotting.
