Gnawing on stuff

Do you cat's like to gnaw on stuff? My middle cat likes to chew on the magazine rack in the bathroom. You'd find this behavior to me more common for dogs. These are my only cats I've ever had for a substantial time. SO is this normal or is Socks the exception to the rule? We did also lock her in the bathroom for a time because she was really wild at night.

I have had cats with the same pre-occupation. They really like my stacks of magazines (not the rack like yours, but the actual edges of the magazines) I don't mind this too much, as they aren't shredding them appart or anything. I think they start with just "marking" them by rubbing the scent releasing glands located near their mouths on them, then like the feel and start gnawing on them a bit.
The only time it bothered me was when one of them started trying to do this to the books on my bookshelf as well...*grr* i have a number of books with cat teeth marks on the spines now..
I had one cat who was addicted to chewing on wires...this got really annoying as he really messed up my phone charger once, and i was always afraid of him getting injured! I tried to keep them out of his reach, but well, you know how cats are. I thought i had him broken of the habit after i was very vigilent about spraying him with a water bottle (which works wonders for my cats with training them to not be on tables and counters or scratching at furniture..they are so well trained that on the rare occasion they try to attempt one of these no-nos, all i have to do is reach for the bottle and they stop, i coudln't tell you the last time i actually had to put more water in it) anywho, so i was spraying him whenever he started playing with a wire, and he had seems to of lost interest
Until one year at christmas that is. I had my artificial tree up (which can be just another hassle all together if you have cats. but that is another story) and all of a sudden, it got darker in the room, and my cat went tearing like a bat out of hades into the other room. It tooke me a second to realize what happened, when i finaly looked at the tree...the lights were all out!! I immediately unplugged the lights and hunted my cat down to check on him. He was freaked out, fluffed up, but other than that fine. I am sure he got quite a jolt, but i checked his mouth (which he didn't like at all) for burns or anything, and didn't find any...kept an eye on him for a while...but he seemed fine. Though he never played with another wire again from what i have ever seen!

My eldest cat did that one too. We had to replace out pre-lit tree cause he ate thru some of the wires. I didn't mind that he liked to bat at the low lying ones but a 17lb cat climbing a fake tree is a sight in itself. He's too big now for one not to notice *LOL*

That was the worst part! My tree too is one that is pre-lit(it is a white tree with white lights) and i put strands of blue lights onit as well, looks very pretty...well, of course he coudln't of chewed through the blue lights which are replacable...no, he chewed through the white light cord....luckily i was able to splive the wires and repair them....but still *l*

they will once in a blue moon..mine are good about not doing it though.
it's just every now and then something is just too enticing not to chew on.
usually it's something plastic, and that gets taken away from them and put up.

I forgot too but I've caught them chewing on cardboard boxes as when I'd examin the box the flaps wouldhave teeth marks in them! Maybe they need more fiber? *LOL*
I dunno that plastic is any good for them nor there probably no flavor incentive to chew that.
