Should people have the right to choose when they die?

In the UK a fellow sufferer of Multiple Sclerosis has been to court to ask the government to clarify the laws regarding helping assisting suicide. At the moment you can be given 14 years in prison for helping someone to end their lives. She wants the law to recognise euthanasia as a legal and legitimate way to end the suffering for people whose lives have become intolerable. Why as humans do we feel the need to consistantly prolong the lives of others even if they are in terrible pain, have incurable diseases, and essentially dont want to live anymore. I believe that under such circumstances individuals have the right to die with dignity.

i never can forget the pains my mother suffered in her last days . She was very very painful . i just don't know how to describe the pains she had at that time. She lost her mind and couldn't move . She vomited time from time. She couldn't get to sleep because of the pain. Well in this situaiton i do think people have the right to choose when they die . Why should they suffer so much and in the end they have to die ?

Yes this is not a life worth getting up to everyday. I believe in the right to die. Just as the government, has the right to take taxes from me.Not alot of people see it the same. But I think if nothing can be done and you are suffering with no quality of life .No one should be able to make it illegal we should have choices under certain circumstances.Sometimes I think its just to get the most money they can out of us. Don't matter to them how we suffer, and then your spouse or family will be paying the bill for the rest of their lives.Because its not legal.Such double standards on /Freedom and choices we are truly allowed to make. How hard this must have been on you grace is another thing ,I think they don't take into account.

That is exactly the type of situation that I think should be avoided. If we love humans so much why would we ever want to see them suffering so much when they are dying. We dont treat pets that way! I am sorry you had to experience that type of suffering. thanks for the comment!

If people have the right to live, why shouldn't they have the right to die? We didn't choose to be born in the first place, so why should we just accept life without question? We didn't ask for it. Don't get me wrong, I love life, but I believe that we should respect what people want. If they want to die, we should not force them to live.

I believe that we should have the right to choose when we die if we are terminally ill. No one should have to spend 14 years in jail for helping someone who wanted to die. Why should anyone have to deal with pain knowing they are going to die. That is terrible.

I agree the idea of suffering potentially for years with a terminal disease seems crazy. We put out pets down when they are ill because we can nt stand to see them in pain. However for humans we keep them in pain! Mortality may scare some people but dying is a part of life! Thanks for the comment!

Yes.
As far as I know, euthanasia is legal in some western countries such as Belgium. Maybe he may try it in another country.

Yeah was on the news couple of nights ago. She wants her long term partner to help her go over to Dignitas clinic and doesnt want him to be arrested when coming back to UK. Why shoud partners be prosecuted for granting them their last wish? I really hope they ammend the stupid laws and help people to end their lives in dignity. I know that I would prefer to end my life in a clinic rather than suffer!

Although we cannot choose when and where to be born,we do have the right to choose when to die.If someone suffers a great pain and almost could not stand any more, maybe choosing to die quietly is a right decision. After all everyone is to die ,which cannot be changed.

Very true we all have to die at some point! Do you think the government should help people to die? If so in what circumstances? thanks for the comment!

I absolutely agree with everything that you've said in your post. It's astonishing to me that we have the right to euthanize our pets and end their suffering and at the same time, we don't have the right to make that decision for ourselves. I suppose that some of the thought is that there are some people that are in good health but simply are so depressed that they don't want to live any more. I do think however that some rules could be put in place to make sure that this isn't abused. I can't imagine why we insist that people experience pain so horrific that just to make life tolerable, they have to be shot up with morphine.

People should have the right to do. It strikes me very odd that, as a society, we will basically ignore people who are struggling to make a living, those on the street, bankrupt, etc... basically not caring if they live or die, and then turn around and forbid that someone who is in great pain take their own life. Euthanasia should be a personal choice and left up to the individual. It should be legalized.

Well, it depends on that person. but some times they have do the euthanasia procedure, when the person is completely reliable on life support, they don't have a choice, then the family and relatives will.i believe they do than just suffering a bit more.
