How would you handle this situation with your bank?

2 days ago, a good friend of mine went to the nearby Credit Union bank ATM machine to withdraw some cash. The amount he intended to withdraw is $200, and the ATM machine only dispensed $160 for him. The receipt he got was displayed $200 been withdraw on that day and time.
So, he called the 1-800 number from the ATM machine; the operator just said they couldn't do nothing about it. They advised him to go back to the bank next day morning and ask the service.
Next day morning around lunch hour, he went to the Credit Union bank, and ask the service personnel. They just said that they couldn't do nothing, and there is a number he can call to ask about the ATM error. Same deal, no one can't deal this mistake, and no one do anything about it.
So, how would you handle this situation?

It seems like no one want to fix the problem so I would go too the bank and close my account. When they ask why then you explain and I bet they may just fix the problem. Such bad customer service is popping up all over the place I wonder why that is.

Somehow, the personnel won't believe what he said. They thought that was a scam or something.

The ATM probably ran out of cash. Whoever is the one to put cash into the machine should be able to look and see that it was 40.00 short. Does his bank balance show that the whole 200.00 was subtracted from his account? I would keep calling until someone did something about it.

Wow, that is just wrong. I know that the ATM machines are supposed to be audited daily. Since your friend knows that he is missing $40 and has talked to the bank about it, they should credit his account with $40 when the audit is completed if the amounts don't jive.
If they won't do that, I believe I would tell the bank that I was going to take my business elsewhere. That should get them to credit the money back to him or else he will have to follow through and leave the bank.
I personally have never had this kind of experience with a bank, but it would make me very mad as that is my money that they are messing with.

As others have said, they should be able to tell how much money has been taken out of the machine and there should be a descrepancy of $40.
I would go back into the bank and speak to somebody different, if they can't help, speak to there manager but I wouldn't leave the bank without getting some help.
I have heard of this happen where I live but the baks have been able to check and reimburse straight away, never say that they cant help.
i would certainly look at changing banks if they cannot help with a small query like this.

A similar case had happened to my friend. He withdrew 500 Euros but he got only 450 Euros. When he called he was asked similarly to go to the Bank on monday. But in this case the bank took some tow weeks and credited the money to his bank account. As I work for IT department of a bank I can explain how a bank is able to do it. There is normally a reconciliation process in bank to match all the accounts, the withdrawls and the deposits. This happens normally ever day after the narmal bank hours. Now that day my friend's account was debited by 500 Euros but the bank's internal account was debited only 450 Euros so the bank could figure that there is a mismatch of 50 Euros. Now they would have verified the time when the transactions actually happened and they could conclude that this is the transaction because of which the mismatch has happened. So it is entirely possible for a bank to take some action in such cases.

Well, that's terrible. I had not find myself in such situations before. However, if it's me, I will persist and insist on talking to the branch manager on it. If he/she is not able to help, I will ask him/her to contact the department head of the one which can rectify this problem. I will persist until someone put the shortfall back in my bank account. I mean, this is the ATM machine's mistake, and someone in the bank ought to put things right.
Well, I will most probably change bank after this, if the service I encountered in the later part are not good too.

This had happened to someone once at my bank, but during business hours. Unfortunately, our telephone service is just terrible. Once, someone had used my bank card and bought a computer. I had to fill out dispute papers, and wait 6 weeks while they rectified it. I had to borrow the excess money to cover the cost of the computer until they reimbursed me after they finalized their investigation.
I would speak with the branch manager if I were your friend, and if that does not help, go to his manager, and keep climbing up until someone corrects this.

This is one hell of a bad service from a bank that should be valuing their customers since they are using the customers' funds to grow their business. Just try to follow-up with the bank and be persistent in resolving the issue and do not lose the receipt. If they will not be able to resolve the issue, I guess, its time for you to find a better bank that can best value their customers more that the money that you are depositing.

I would definitely threaten to switch banks. I once had someone somehow get ahold of my credit card information and used it to pay their $250.00 cable bill! I called and they immediately (temporarily) put the money into my account while they investigated and the problem was handled quickly and efficently. If they had acted like that, I would have switched immediately. I was so impressed with how they handled it that I moved my other bank account over.
Talk to the manager and threaten to switch banks. I bet they'll be over it pretty quickly.

This is bad service from the bank, if they don't believe him i suggest he cancel his account there and move to another bank. is there organizations that handles this kind of problems regarding banks and their Atms? and probably he should tell media about this inconvenience.

Technicly, the company that owns the ATM machine (in this case the bank) should happily and helpfully rectify the situation. When these machines are loaded with cash, they know exactly how much is in there. There are computer records of every transaction made at that particular machine, and though it might take a little time on the side of the bank, if your friend was shorted $40 dollars, when they count up the money in the machine, it should have $40 dollars more than what the transaction log says it should have, and they can give him back his mony. Yes, this is an inconveinience for the bank, but they should be happy to do it to keep their customers happy.
This happened to a friend of mine. She was shorted only $20 from her withdrawl, and it took a couple of days for them to get back to her, but they did, and they credited the money back to her account with no problem.

It is really difficult to handle it, because there is no proof that he only get $160 instead of $200. In my home country, there have been several cases that people got forged notes from ATM machines and nobody was responsible for them at all.

Hmmm well i guess its a difficult situation. Your friend could have easily got out 200 and just said he got 160! He could have counted it wrong or any number of mistakes! However i think Banks are terrible! They never actually help any body! If you find me one person that has phoned up their bank/gone to the bank with a problem and says "I love my bank, they are really helpful and i never have ANY problems" i will be amazed! I had to phone up my bank once. You go through all these security questions just to be told "Sorry we cant help you!" i was so angry!
If i was your friend i would tell the bank you will either move banks or even take legal action against them! Even if you dont actually do it lol. Or seek legal advice. He should go into the bank and when they say "You have to phone this number" he should say he wants them to phone it right now and sort it out for him because he has phoned him and no one will help. When the people on the other end say they cant do anything im sure the bank will try to sort it out further. If not then... They are a bad bank and you should move your money!
