A few questions about hockey...

I just started watching hockey this year, and I really enjoyed it. Of course I think I would like it more if I understood more, so hopefully one of you (or several) can help me with some of these questions! Oh, some of these may sound dumb, but I'm new to hockey...so...yeah What exactly are the rules? Is there a "hockey season"? (basically, when can I expect to put hockey into my schedule) Is there a site I can use to help me pick a team to cheer for? Why is it that the hockey players have tons of pads and protection while the refs don't? Is there a site where I could look up the basics of hockey? Thanks in advance! Happy mylotting!
