You see a man and woman drowning. Whom would you rescue, and why?

This is one question which might be biased, but I sure would like to know why they would do it, considering the situation they find themselves in.

I am assuming they are strangers to me. To be honest, I'm not a good swimmer. The person who would be saved by me would be the closest. Another thing I would have to consider is the strength of the man, if he panics and pulls me under then he could drown me. If they are beyond what I may consider a save distance for me then I would not be able to help either one, risking my own life would not help my family if I drown.

The first one I would rescue would be the one I could get to the quickest. It just makes more sense. Also, the one you pull out of the water, could possibly help you get to the second one if they were able. I wouldn't choose based on gender.

The woman would be lighter to pull out of water and the man, in the middle of his struggle could take you down with him. Neretheless, I vouch your view.
