Spyware on PTC sites

Hey guys and girls.
I am surfing a lot of PTC sites. Sometimes my virusscaner brings some alerts about some java programms on viewed pages that could be harmful. My question: Is that just some error of my Antivirus software or is there some real danger by surfing that sites? Can i just turn of java? Or is it possible that sites will not work anymore? Can i even get some virus without downloading and starting it`s program, just by viewing a page? THX 4 your answers.

Your system can get infected even if you download nothing. According to a survey a system without an antivirus gets infected within 14 minutes from connecting to Internet. SO be careful while surfing. If your antivirus suspect about something malicious get away from there. Even I had faced a problem once while surfing my educational board's website.
