Yes I understand that they are huge and full of supposedly great knowledge, but I'm having to pay over $100 for some of my college textbooks! Why do you think they cost so much?

Well the publisher has to make money, your school also wants profit and the government wants to collect taxes. I saw a breakdown of it hanging up in my schools bookstore last semester and most of the cost were publishers cost and bookstore revenue. You can buy them online at cheapbooks.com. A chemistry book at my school was selling for $140 + tax new or $110 + tax used. I bought the book online for only $30. When the school had their book buyback they said that they didn't want my book, that they were already overstocked for next semester, so I'm glad I didn't buy one from their store

In my school, books are very expensive too,the price includes copyright tax, transport costs, and if the book you need is from other country,it will also have tariff,so books in college cost much more than their actual cost. To save money,me and some of my classmates decided to use some old books or duplicate some materials.

The people who created those textbooks went through a heck of a lot of research and verification and whatnot. Those companies and the individuals within probably just want as much money as possible for what they made. Also, anything in college is generally somewhat expensive, textbooks aren't exempt.
