The worse nightmare is identity theft. Someone stole your social security number or other identification information for malicious purpose. They can create a mess on your credit within your life. To resolve a identity theft case may take 26 hours. But the effect will be around more than a couple of years. How would you protect yourself from this crime?

Hi, My son is going through this right now! Someone got hold of his social security number and is creating all kinds of bills for him. He has turned this matter over to the police because he believes he knows who it is. It's a very long story and a sad one at that but this person who is doing this iskinda like family to us.

In my opinion you protect yourself by limiting access to your personal information. I have been through this and believe me it wasn't a fun road. A friend of my nieces (she was dating him at the time) just helped himself to my SSN and my credit cards. The credit cards were really no big deal. As soon as I noticed I canceled them. It wasn't until a year later that I found out he was creating bills with my SSN. All together it has taken about 5 years to get it all completely resolved and some of it will go on for a while yet. He is in jail now for that along with other things. So nobody wins in these situations. It can create a nightmare for people
