In Australia, reality shows dominate television viewing. A show to find Australia's best non-professional chef has just concluded, and the ratings for the finale broke all records for the most viewers. We have another cooking reality show featuring "Jamie" what his name from England. Then ther's World's Most Strict Parents, in which two uncrontrolable Australian youths are sent overseas for a week to get sorted out in a foreign country. We also have Farmer Takes a Wife. Several farmers are introduced to ten girls to find the most compatible, and so on. Another that comes to mind is Australia's Perfect couple." Are there many reality shows in your country? Do you like/watch them? I am not a great fan, but my wife loves them.

I believe that it is so much cheaper to produce a reality show than a storyline show. they seem to be taking over. We have the big Brother that starts with I think 10 or twelve people in a house and they must eliminate one at a time. It's on at least three times a week and it really gets old after 8 years. To me it's is like watching kids trying to get their own way then complaining about it. The same with surviver. Them we have wife swap. Women of totally different ideas try to make a family over to be like their own. then there is the Nanny a British nanny that goes into peoples homes nd teaches them how to make their kids behave. A couple of years ago they took a group of kids to a ghost town and had them set up government and so forth. it was interesting to see how smart those kids were. Yes there is a reality show for just about every thing. In a couple of weeks a neighbor hood is being shout off from the rest of the world. Those neighbors will be enemies by the time it is over.

You're lucky. the promos are on constantly here. We have that little black box for TV so don't have much choice even when it's coming in decent.

Hi deebomb, I think you hit the nail on the head, when you mention about the money they take to produce as against a good drama or comedy show. I have not considered that before, but that would be the main reason TV stations like, and promote them so much. Thank you for the information.

Hi mipen2006, We have all these in Spain too. Farmer takes a Wife, The Chef one, One about who does the best Supper, Lost In The Tribe, A family has to live 21 days with another Family totally different to what they are used to in a different country and they have to adapt themselves to the other´s ways of life in that short time. The prize is shared between all those that get accepted. That one is not too bad it has been quite interesting. Also Total Makeover is another one that has a good acceptance here also. Survivors where famous People are on a Desert Island for three Months is quite apalling its so boring the same thing over and over they never change anything in it. Also we have You´ve Got Talent and the X Factor but prefer You´ve Got Talent there are more ordinary down to earth People of all ages in it. Although they don´t usually let the much younger children win because there is a protection law to keep these kids safe thank goodness loads of talented kids though. Last but not least is the Man Meets Woman thing which I find totally daft most of it is a put on job they just make it up as they go along it is popular at the moment though. Hope this helps. Regards.

Hi lovingangelsinstead, I didn't realized just how many reality shows there are out there when I first raised the discussion. I guess the real winners with reality shows are the ones that originate the idea, and then franchise it worldwide, and the television stations who have reasonably cheap television. I find most of them totally daft also, and wish they would slip in popularity, so some decent television would return to our screens. Thank you for your detailed response.

Hi Mipen,Thanks for your reply, I am just hoping that they will not bring Big Brother back again ever they have dropped the Celebrity Big Brother but the other one not. Attached to these reality shows are discussion shows which are even worse and they go on and on for ever and ever. Big Brother is just really a big stomachache. When I was in England once I found a program that imitated impersonated the people that have been taking part in Big Brother now this was funny. Apart from the fact I had no idea who those people were the impersonators were hilarious. Unluckily for us it seems that Big Brother will be back with a bang but I never ever watch it. It seems to take precedence even over the Tour of Spain or anything else plus the never ending adverts that go with it. Regards.

Hey dlr, I'm with your husband, I hate them also. Maybe husbands around the world could join forces against reality television, and we could change what we watch on TV. Thanks for your input.

Here in the UK we also have many reality shows. Some are interesting, some not. The program about to buy house is popular, also programs about to sell your items and collect money also very popula, such real deal, boot fair show, etc. yesterday i watched a program to teach people how to cook economically and save money. I like watch the program to teach people about gardening. i feel it's interesting. Basically i like watch the reality shows, maybe because i'm a courious person. i like to know other's life. and it can help me to open my mind about how to live in the UK. happy mylotting.

Hi sblossom, I believe some of the programs you are talking about don't really fall into the reality category, but more the live category. A realirty show starts with x number of participants, with some dropping out over the weeks, until there is only one left to claim the first prize. I like live cooking and gardening shows, but not the reality type. Thanks for your contribution.

Yes, there are absolutely too many reality shows on television! However, I would be lying if I said I never watch any of them! I LOVE American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance! On a negative note though, reality shows have destroyed families: Hogan Knows Best (The Hogan's), Newlyweds (Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson), etc. etc...

Hey kbeaden, I agree there are far too many. From your response, and the fact that Australian television follow the American lead, it looks like there are still a lot more to come. Hope we don't get the two you mantion. Thank you for your reply.

There are WAY too many reality shows on TV. Most of my friends watch these programs and can't stop talking about them. I used to watch a lot of television and thought it was important. Then I got a life (sort of) and I stopped caring about television and reality shows. However I am still a little bit of an internet junkie though :(

Hello Druid, I agree, and they must have a fair following, or they would be off the air. I reckon there are many people who have switched their addiction from the television to the Internet. Mysely, well, I am not addicted to TV, but the Internet, that's another thing. I have to get my daily fix. Thank you for your response.

reality shows is not that big in my country. we do have some reality shows that are popular but it does not dominate our television. mostly it is soap shows that dominate our television. there was one show that was popular or became a hit unexpectedly. a reality show about kids or teenagers, who wanted to be a celebrity. and they go through this different trainings to show off their talents. and who ever gets the most votes will win at the end. and just like every other reality show, every week one contestant gets voted of the competition for the chance to compete for another week. it was a great show as the winner became a popular singer and actress now. she made it big also and still popular now. she had only hit single but it was a popular mainly because the song is good besides she can sing also.

Hello hotsummer, I would say you're lucky. When I was living in Thailand, there weres't many there also. They had a lot of drama type serials, which weren't very interesting for me, but the Thais loved them. Maybe it's the same in The Philippines. Thank you for your response.

I was hooked on “Big Brother” for the first three seasons or so, and then it got boring, predictable and senseless especially the “Uncut” shows, not really risqué just boring! I watched one season of The Biggest Loser because I knew one of the contestants from my daughter’s ballroom school and I stopped watching “Farmer wants a wife” after the first one. I do enjoy “World’s Strictest Parents” at the moment as I sit and cringe as I look ahead to my daughter turning into a teen! I do like the show but it is new and no doubt will wear thin after a while. I think that’s the problem right there, these shows go on too long. It is interesting to watch human behaviour in different circumstances but after a while it becomes a case of ‘been there, seen that’. As to why people put themselves through reality TV is beyond me, the prize isn’t even that much sometimes!

Well, my daughter in Perth likes them, so when we were there, there was little option, except it bacame a good time to take a walk. I hate when they try to build up the suspense when announcing who is to leave that week. I couldn't stand the biggest loser. Personally, I'll be very happy when they become less popular. Thanks for your comments, and have a nice Friday, paula.

I live in India, south India. I think there are too many relaity shows in the channels I watch. Some are very good and some are very bad. Usually I get confused between them, what to watch and what not to watch. Sometimes I have seen people presenting relaity shows keep imitating famous actors.

Hi daliaj, are your reality shows copies of those from the U.S., or are they Indian originals. Maybe they're more interesting than the ones in Australia. Thank you for your input to the discussion.

I can tollerate some, but I find that mostly they are similar. I hate the suspension they try to build before sending contestants home. Thanks for responding.

Hi mipen, we're actually a bit addicted to one of your reality shows 'The Biggest Loser Australia' which we watch here on Youtube in the winter. It gets really repetitive but on the whole it's a good show and very amusing. My son has had the good eating habits I give him reinforced by what he sees and it's more effective than me just saying don't eat that it's bad for you, he can see the consequences now of bad eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. Maybe this winter we can tune into the chef thing too but you'll have to tell me what it's called.

Hi thea, thank you for reminding me of yet another reality show, I forgot to include on my list. That is one I couldn't watch to be honest. I thought driving those overweight people to do exercises that were beyond them was not good. Incidently, I have just seen a woman who lost 270 kilos,-not on biggest loser- that's more than the top seven on the reality show put together. Thanks for your reply.

For me in the US, I think that reality shows are excessive. Some are creative and fresh and there's are many just poorly done knock-offs. I can't say that I'm really a fan and that it is necessary for me to catch certain shows. I actually haven' really been watching as much tv s I use to as a kid,so maybe I just lost interest.

Hey LiveLove, the quality of some of the reality shows here in Australia encourages a loss of interest in television, and with the popularity of them at a peak, there isn't much else to choose from at times. To me, it's a good time to take an evening walk, nd get some exercise. Thanks for your contribution.

i think reality shows have taken over showbizz all over the world..even in India reality shows are usually the most watched television programs of all..Mtv has triggered of a series of reality shows starting from Roadies ,Splitsvilla..so on and the other channels have also followed suit..i myself love watching reality tv more than anything becuse there is no pretensions..it shows how the actual real world looks like..whether its harsh or sweet..

Hello sweetsatabdi, you are one of the lucky ones who enjoy them. I say lucky because there are plenty around. Most responses here think there are too many, and I agree with them. But, they are very popular, and will be for some time to come, so you will enjoy your television for some time to come. Thank you for your response.

In the US I also believe that the Reality Shows are dominating Primetime TV. They take off good quality written shows to put on reality garbage and its really getting to the point that watching TV is getting boring. I rather rent a movie. In fact I'm thinking I could get rid of Direct TV and what movies only and read the news on the computer. Why spend $70.00 dollars to watch boring material?
