There are many types of network adapter in the market and it really depend on what you are using. In my own experience..I upgrade my Windows 2000 operating system to Windows Xp and it fails to detect my network adapter. I am using PCI network adapter card in my desktop and wireless network adapter card pre-installed inside my laptop computers. I fix it when I open my CPU casing..then I found out that the PCI card of my internal modem is loose..You have to take it out..then insert it again which i correctly fix it by pushing it back carefully on the PCI slot. Then, i start the computer and when I check on the Device manager.the network adapter could now be found..After..that everything is back to normal again..It really depend on your network adapter you used it may be internal or external types?..you have to identify it before trying to fix it..

Well, are you sure it is a virus?
Is your windows copy original?
Have you tried to install it again?
What about your network adapter drivers? Are they up to date?
You can't find those drivers on device manager, right?

First ensure that it is properly seated on the slot (in case of a plug-in card type).
Then see to it that it is detected in window's devise manager. Maybe the driver you installed was not the right one, try uninstalling that particular one only, reboot and see. Some LAN cards uses the generic drivers provided by windows since you where able to connect to the internet prior to driver installation. If its working fine with just it then leave it as it is.
