Sounds like a stupid question, but I want to know the exact answer about this. It's the desktop clock, you know, the one appear in the right corner of Windows interface. This clock always updated. My question is, how did it still works or updated even the computer turned off, from where it get its power when the cable already plugged off? Is there any component inside the pc to store electricity for supply, or may be something else I don't know?

well, even though your laptop or computer is turned off... the bios clock is still ticking, that's because there is a button cell batter in every motherboard... Its that thing that keeps the bios running even though you turned off your computer....
Hope i explained it well... ^_^

Oh, so the shape is similar like wrist watch battery I assume, okay I'll check it sometimes. Five years? wow, that's a long long time, that's why not often people talking about it. Most of them just talking about hard disk, and RAM.

This is new knowledge for me I don't know exactly how its shape, is it big or tiny, and where's the exact place of that battery. I only know about sockets for plugging cable like RAM socket, processor socket, etc. I don't know detail about motherboard, not an expert for that. Anyway, do we need to change it every other time? How long must we change the battery, is it per month or per year? Sorry if I back questioning you again.

There is a little battery on the motherboard that keeps the time and date. It is called the CMOS battery. If you were to take the battery out the time and date would be lost and you would need to reset it. I'm a PC tech so I've had to put in a new battery every now and then.

I don't know that there is battery on the motherboard. I often cleaning inside of my pc, unplugging cables, but I never realize it Before you give me this information I just imagining there is one component like condensator for storing power and become the source of its power when the cable is plugged off. Now I know, nice helpful response

Thanks, glad I could help you :)
By the way, you are being smart when you clean the inside of your computer. Too much dust inside of it can cause your computer to overheat.

I know, sometimes dust can interfere the processor's fan speed, the result will bad if that's happening, but silly me never know about the motherboard battery after I gain enough knowledge from this discussion I'll check the battery also.

well the answer is very simple the computer motherboard has a battery. a very small one but that is the reason why all the settings and the clock is on even when the computer is switched off completely from any kind of power source. And that is why, sometimes few people complain that their computer clock is not working properly and that their BIOS settings are not working properly. That is only because of the fact that their motherboard battery is down. I hope i have solved your doubt :P

What's funny is I often cleaning inside of my pc, and unplugging RAM card on motherboard but I never realize there is a battery in there. May be the place is hidden or not easily visible, that's why I never saw the battery, pretty small thing may be. So, when the battery run off its power could mean disaster to the motherboard? I mean if the BIOS not running it can ruin all of system setting and the operating system probably can't work properly.

I was also like you back then curios why the clock of a PC doesn't get out of synch with the current time. But when I started tinkering with the motherboard i learned that a motherboard has this small battery that keeps the time from running even after a PC is turned off.

Yeah that is the best thing to do as I learned that when I was trying to tinker around my PC desktop. Because I have observed that my clock started going out of synch already. i tried looking what is causing it and a friend of mine told me its time to changed the battery of your motherboard. And after I located it, i replaced the battery and again my clock started going normal again.

I'm glad I'm not the only one Yeah, I really curious about that, because I don't know if there is a battery on the motherboard, no one ever talking about that, at least around me. I think after I finish up this work I'll check it out right away just to cure my curiosity.

Oh, you learn that from your experience, that's good. Different than you, I learn it today from my curiosity I know myLot is the right place to ask, because here people never laugh at the question, they are all nice people and will try to give the best answer even for the stupidest question. Nice to have myLot on my life

If I never ask in here I will never know about it Now what I need to know is the exact place of this battery, the size, and how to maintenance or replace it. I never do that kind of maintenance, so I have some doubt I can do it properly, need to learn more about it.

It is very simple my friend there is a small battery on your motherboard you can look it when you remove one side of your cabinet, its the most essential part of the motherboard. here is a reason to know why its the most important is because whenever you remove the battery and switch on your computer it does not get started, some also some times due to the battery failure the system does not get started. Let me know if need any further clarifications. Comment with your views.

It is a small battery circular in shape open one side of you cabinet and you can have a glance at it. Its not that costly. Due to this cell the clock in system is updated. If you remove that battery then your OS will not boot.

I never experiencing that kind of trouble that's why I never know about mother board battery until know. It's just my curiosity to know more detail about it, started with seeing the windows clock Knowledge indeed need two things, first is curiosity and second is braveness to ask or search. But I still don't know if the battery is rechargeable when we plugging on the power source.

Battery located on motherboard of PC is called CMOS cell. CMOS not only update clock but also save CMOS configuration. You might have seen on your motherboard as a circle still structure like button.

CMOS configuration, it's the same like BIOS configuration right? The system outside Operating System and keep the computer active even if we have plugged off the cable. I think I can say that CMOS is the subconscious mind of computer

Hi flaredust, I remember having to have my battery changed in the computer as everything kept reverting to what must have been the day the battery ran out. But when there's a power cut, as there often is, the telephone does not update to the right time for a couple of days even though it has a battery in it. I don't get that

Well I'm a bit of a techniphobe and the phone is a nightmare. Sometimes it would ring but still kept ringing when I picked it up so I thought there was something wrong with it as I didn't even know it had a battery inside and it certainly gave no warning it had to be replaced. Then there's the times I've phoned the phone company on the mobile to say the phone isn't working when it's been nothing to do with the phone company at all, very embarrasing

It's probably because your date setting following online update, but your setting wrongly set to the different time zone. Actually I'm not really sure about your problem is it caused by the setting or your motherboard itself. But, if your problem only occur for few days and back right again after that, probably you don't need to be worry too much, may be the battery not placed right to the socket, kind of loose from its socket, after have some shake (like laptop when it's bring on the road)the battery will move to the right position.

Bigger, hmm.. but I think it's just have the same voltage as the wrist watch battery, because it's actually just used for saving the clock update and BIOS setting. I hope I have time to clean up my desktop pc to see the actual shape of it, because now I'm too busy myLotting and do other job

i guess you have more than enough info about it now. just wanted to add that it's a 3 volts battery about 2 cm in diameter. lasts about 3 to 5 years depending on the quality. so when you feel the need to replace the battery make sure you buy a good quality battery from reputed brands only.

yes it is the round cmos lithium battery on your motherboard which keeps the clock running even when there is no power supply to the computer.
it is located at the bottom half of the motherboard, if you want to identify it the no CR2032 or "lithium battery" will be written on it.

Oh, that will help me a lot. I don't know what the exact place of the battery before you told me, because even I often clean my pc from outside until inside, but I never realize about this component. Glad to find good answers from others, you're really helping me a lot. I thought it will be easier for me to visualized that battery as a wrist watch battery to keep remind me about its shape when I start to search its location inside my pc.

I believe there's a battery installed on the motherboard. It keeps the clock running even though your computer has no power. I'm not sure if this battery is rechargeable but it does the job so I guess that's what matters.

Some say that battery need to be changed after some period of years. I don't know which one is true, is it rechargeable battery or not, perhaps the way I can really figure it out is by experiencing that trouble myself.

The Computer has a RTC(real time clock) chip which is usually used for running the clock even though the power is off.when ever you start your computer the CMOS battery gets the time and it shows exactly the correct time to us.
Many people knows about CMOS that actually gives time.To show the Time both RTC and Cmos should work..

Yeah, after I'm asking the question, members of myLot giving me good answers, you're also one of them. I know, there is real time clock but what I'm not really sure before is about its source of power, obviously it is just a simple component called battery
