Are you like my friend who wants to listen to even more sadder songs or do you try to cheer yourself up with happier tunes?

Nice question....
When I feel sad I prefer hearing to rock music..It helps me to feel better and relaxed.. I also prefer listening to some pop songs,to cheer myself up.Its very tough to be happy, and I would like to be happy.Slow music specially classical or sad songs, may put me in a bad mood. Its better to ward off the sadness, when it touches us, through music. It is a good therapy.

I agree. I would recommend Katy Perry songs. She has such variety in her music: happy bop-bop tunes and tunes for really sad times.
Thanks for sharing!

Always sad music. Sometimes it makes you really depressed but thats ok becasue you are just sympathising with the problems. I always look for songs that the person is having the same problem. However if I dont listen to really sad music I like bitter punk rock. That usually cheers me up becasue instead of being sad and depressed I can just be bitter.

So far it seems like the majority would like to listen to some other sad people singing. Could it be that the saying 'misery loves company' is the case?

Usually I listen sad, slow, quite, and lonly songs to comfort myself.Everyone needs these to get some resonance to let themselves feel better. You can express your emotion, you feeling with the sad songs. But sometimes I like to listen to the rock music to shout and shake. In this way I take the sadness of my body.Apart from these,my friend tell me that I should listen to the cheerful music so that I won't be addicted to the sadness.
In fact,it depend on your own feeling.

A bit of physical movement to shake off the blues. I agree with your method. As for me, listening to the Bohemian Rhapsody always takes me out of whatever sadness I feel. I don't know why.

Like the previous person who responded, I enjoy listening to sad and emo-ish sounding music when I'm sad. Specifically, I really feel comforted listening to bands such as 30 Seconds to Mars and Matchbox Twenty. Their songs are depressing and yet powerful and it seems to renew my emotional strength when I listen to their CD's. On the other hand, my girlfriend prefers listening to hard angry metal so I guess different people have different tastes.

You're right although judging from the answers here, the majority would like to listen to music they can relate to when they are sad i.e. more boohoo tunes
