I am an owner of a 12 year old Shih Tzu and I had him since I was 15.
I heard from many people that avaerage lifesapn for dogs are 10 to 12 years.
I am wondering if there are record breakers here?
I am also hoping that my Shih Tzu can be with me for years to come.
Now, his hearing had failed him but he still can see and plays alot.
I hope I can hear some wonderful stories.

We have a 4 month old lhasa-tzu breed female dog. I don't have any idea for the life span but it's nice to hear that you have took care of your dog quite a long time now. 12 years is a very long time. I'm sorry to hear that your dog is slightly deaf. Just make sure you spend quality time with your pet. We also have a dog his name is Bruce who is 10+ years old. I can't really say that his hearing is already bad but his eyes do have cataracts already. Look at his picture!

Well.. Is really wonderful when you know that they are always looking forward to see you when you come back from school/work.
I do wish that every dog owner would really put in their heart to love and care for their dogs.
Let's wish our 'Grandpa/Gandma' can be healthy till old age..

Hi nickie,as far as I know larger breeds of dogs live 12 -15 years average.Smaller breeds can live up to 20 years,if you take care of their health.I own at this time a small breed ,but he's only two.I keep up with his shots, because that can have an effect on his life span.I believe a shih tzu can live longer than a large breed. They're pretty small.I know they live longer than 12.Just keep him healthy and good luck with your dog.

Hi nickiedog, I did keep a lovely dog before. It’s really adorable and I loved it very much. It was my best companion during my teens. Yeah, it’s given by one of my dad’s friend before he migrated to another country.
I didn’t know how old the lovely dog was then. He had silky white long fur with big and conspicuous spots in black color on certain parts of its body. I usually would take it hang around the nearby park in the evening. It’s its most happy hour
It was rather sad that it became weaker and got tired easier after a few years. It then had left me forever one afternoon. Later I learn that the average lifespan of dog is only 10 to 12 years. I decide not to keep any dog as pet anymore. I’m afraid that I couldn’t suffer the same pain from losing another pet dog again
Anyway dogs of different breeds have different average lifespan. Below is the link where you could find some of the popular breeds average life expectancy, for further reference.

It always depends:
1. On the breed of dog
2. On the health of the dog and
3. On the individual dog.
I'd check out the Shih Tzu breed site, and see what they say is the "typical" length of life. I've never had one ...... I lost my last dog, which was a Smooth Chow Chow, at the age of 15 years old. I hope my other ones live that long!

the average life span varies a lot between species. I think the average for Shih Tzu's is actually closer to 13-15. I have friends who have had dogs who have lived to 18-20. The lifespan depends on so many different things. Every dog is different. I have not had a dog pass away yet. I have a 12 year old chocolate lab and a 2 year old yellow lab. They are the only dogs I have ever owned. In general smaller dogs live longer than bigger dogs but this is not always the case.

Yes I think you're right about the life span of dogs. I got a pet dog once a long time ago and she got to live for 12 years. I guess keeping your pet healthy and providing healthy food to them contribute to a longer lifespan. I'm sure a great pet owner having a dog to still be alive at that age:)

Shitz su lives are longer than u think. 10 - 12 years is for the larger breeds, ie Labs, Retrievers, Spaniels, Rottweillers etc. The smaller breeds tend to live longer ie; Poodles, Shitz su, Fox + Jack Russel Terriors.
I know of alot of the smaller breeds the owners say their dogs are like the Energizer Bunny, they just keep going forever and ever and ever... you get the picture... On an individual basis each dog lives different lifestyles, so enjoy.
REMEMBER ALWAYS LUV/ CARE FOR YOUR DOG/ PET, THET WILL ALWAYS LUV U...

My next door neighboor had one that lived to be 16 to 17 years old.
I guesse it would all depend on the health of the dog also and any medical problemes.
good luck to you.

I too hv a dog, but he is only three years old yet. My previous dog was a lapsa dog and he lived to the age of fourteen and a half. These days with good food products for dogs and better medical facilities available dogs' life span has also increased and they easily live upto 14 or 15 years of age.

Most dogs do live around 10 and 12 years. As others have posted, it depends on lots of factors. Health and Diet is very important. Also, different dog breeds have different life spans. Some breeds are known for their differnt health issues. It also depends on the size. Smaller dog breeds like yours tend to live a longer life, and larger dogs shorter. There are many exceptions, so I wouldn't worry about your dog. What's important is that he's active and healthy. I have known dogs and cats have lived lot longer that the normal life span!!!

normal lifespan of dogs is 10 to 12 years. sometime depending upon the breed of the dog, it differs. usually toy dogs live upto 14 years normally. some big sized dogs struggle to live upto 10 years.
