how do you know if a picture is copyrighted or not?

If the image is having copy right, then it will be filled with the water mark of the site name which owns the right (refer some images here:
http://www.fotosearch.com/photos-images/computer.html)The water mark will be visible if we see the image deeply.
But this is not the case always and the copy right information might be given in the site itself which contains the images.

Yes thank you that all worked well. I did spend some time having a look , but got quite bogged down and confused with all the terms and conditions. Some sites are ok about using them for commercial use, but others are not, and where I got stuck is...."is using them on mylot classed as commercial use or not?" Angelie

Let's see. If u wanna know whether a photo is copyrighted or not, i'm guessing you wanna post that photo in a forum or blog right? Here's an idea. Post the photo an then [here's the crucial step, listen carefully] WAIT...
If nothing happens, the picture is most probably not copyrighted. On the other hand, if u get sued or something, the photo is copyrighted. :P
