Why does everyone think witchcraft is devil worship?

I told someone yesterday that I was Pagan and practice witchcraft on a daily basis and he told me that witchcraft is devil worship. I had to look at him and ask him if he noticed me doing anything that looked like devil worship and he said no. It is amazing that those who practice witchcraft get accused of worshiping a creature they dont believe in.
Any thoughts on this?

Well if your gonna look up to it, this act is a sin because we all know that God is the only source of power and having your own could be with someone else. If your gonna think and assess who's the other source of that, there could be nothing else but the devil itself. They may deny the fact that their not worshiping the devil, but its like this. A lie is a lie, even if its good or bad it will still be a lie and considered as a sin. But i didn't say that i'm against witchcraft.

Ok wait a min I never said I dont believe in a God. AND how can Pagains worship something they dont believe in. Pagains dont believe in the Devil. We feel the Devil was created by man to scare ther people in worshiping the way they wanted them to. By saying that if a person dosnt worship God that they are automatically worshiping the Devil is another way of saying your against it.
OOH and FYI Pagains DO worship a God as well as a Goddess there is NO devil involved at all. Can worship that which we dont believe in.

This is according to your religion and is of course subjective. To a pagan, it is standard worship as is praying and attending church in your own faith, recognizing "God" as your religion teaches.

Ok. i'm just answering your discussion.sorry if you got offended.
@xfahhctor
yes, it is according to my religion. I am not a pagan so i don't really know anything about it. my mom keeps on telling me when i was young that it was devilish and I don't have any friends here in our country who practice witchcraft or pagan.

I'm sorry that happened to you, I'm married to a Pagan. I'm not for the religion myself, I think that it damages people. My spouse is not the same person, my spouse is a lot darker now and sometimes very scary. My spouse used to be easy to talk to and not now. I feel that it's the religion that's done this to my spouse.

I am sorry that is happening to your spouse. Some people dont know how to controll the dark arts and end up letting it take them over. The dark arts are very touchy and IF not done properly can mess up a persons entire life. I am a firm believer that what ever a person sends out can and WILL come back to them and if the dark arts are being practiced then what ever workings they are doing they will come back 3 times worse than when they sent it out. Personally I prefer to stay neutral and do everything for the greater good myself. Everything I do is carefully worded so that NO one gets hurt and I will not get harmed in the end either. I make shure that when something comes back it comes back 3 times better than when I sewnt it out so I dont mess up my life or that of my family. Hopefully your spouse will realise there actions before it is too late. I will light a candle for you and your family hoping that they will see the light and return to the white side and not the dark.

I appreciate your comment and thank you for your kind words. I hope that what you do will help my spouse, right now I'm on the verge of leaving and I'm hoping that someone anyone will tell him that what he's doing is wrong. I've tried and I can't get through to him. All he sees is a wife whom he thinks is too stupid to get where he's coming from. Speaking from his religion I've had an experience with it ( it was bad) and so now I'm fearful of it.

Well, with a thousand apologies…I too think that witchcraft is worshipping the evil. Maybe because most people have been brought up to think this way since our childhood. All our fairytales, folktales, grandamtales…hearsay, superstitions…everything that is an intrinsic part of a person, says that witches and wizards are basically bad people, living on the outskirts of civilized society and practicing evil…they are always called upon by scheming kings and queens to wreck havoc on the protagonist’s life! I hope you understand…
Even then, its from here at mylot and also by reading about Ipshita Chakraborty (a Bengali lady who proudly proclaims herself as a witch) that I came to have second thoughts about sorcery…though I must say that I don’t know if sorcery and witchcraft are the same or not.
I also heard the religion ‘pagan’ for the first time here…so it’s a sort of an eye-opener, albeit an insufficient one. I think if you people want a better understanding of your religion from others, then you should be more active in spreading its awareness, its true essence to society. maybe you already do, but its definitely not worldwide. And even you would admit that killing ‘witches’ in remote Africa or a village somewhere in India, does not actually do good to your craft.
And then we have the tanrtriks in India who are similarly called wizards or witches and who are called to drive off evil spirits which can be controlled only by worshipping Satan…so I hope you understand how confusing the entire situation is.

I do understand what you are sayiing but what upsets me the most is when i try to educate a person that has false information they fight me about it by still saying I am wrong for having my own beliefs and that I am a sinner because saposidely I dont believe in a God when I tell them I do. What upsets me is those people who are not willing to be educated even a little to learn that there are religions that DO worship a satan but Pagains are not one of them. This is my issue. Every person I come across who is HARD CORE Christian is not willing to be educated on the truth of it all. Yet they are are ones who preach that Education is important above everything else but they are not willing to learn about another religion to get the truth and the facts.

Well if you really want honesty, even though I believe in God you should be open to hearing what I have to say. The fact is, once a person says they DO NOT believe in the devil, I find it difficult to understand where their belief in God comes from when the bible clearly mentions Satan over and over. And you are right in one thing maybe if people tried to just be an example and try to understand others, then you would be more open to listen to what they have to say about Paganism. Because I'm confused, you say you believe in God but, not the devil. What God are you referring to? The God in the bible says many many times that there is a devil and his is the enemy of God. The definition of paganism is any other religious practices besides Christianity, Judism, and Islam. So, you should be more specific about what "God" you are saying you believe in... With Love and not judgement.

I think witchcraft is not a devil worship, it's two different thing, you do a devil worship if you hurt people, that's the point, so as long the witchcraft is not hurting everybody, it's not a devil worship, God also do some magic, but He do it for the goodness to the people He loves and care ... am i right? hehe

To a degree. There are those who practice the dark arts who dont believe in the devil. They are just very selfish people. There is a religion that is based on Satan Worship but that is NOT Paganism. Pagans worship a God AND a Goddess. Everything they do is for the greater good of all humankind.

For starters I do NOT drink or use blood in my workings. Also I do not believe the Devil exists. What your thinking of is a religin called Satanism, or Voodoo those religions use blood and animal sacrifice. NOT Paganism. Pagans believe in a God AND a Goddess. Yes there are some that practice the black arts but IF dont properly NO ONE gets hurt in any way. Before accusing someone of worshiping something do a little research and learn about it that way you can make an assessment based on education not movies or what you hear from others.

First, who is "everyone?" As far as I know, only people who believe in the possibility of devils is going to make this kind of accusation. That probably leaves out everybody with common sense, and who isn't a religious fanatic. As for "practicing" witchcraft, you might just as well be bowing and praying in a church for all the effect it has in the real world. It may be an enjoyable fantasy that can be shared with others, but that's all it is -- just fantasy.

your response reminds me of a saying i love, though i am not sure where it comes from
"It doesn't matter what you believe, as long as you believe in something"
For the majority of society, having a "greater power" of some sort is a very important of their lives. I am not here to judge one way or another on someone elses belief system, but i do understand that it makes life seem a lot more worth living, if you have a faith and belief system of some sort that can bring you comfort, and allow you to not feel like such an insignificant speck in such a big world.
If you wanted to worship dogs...or believe and pray to giant spaghetti monsters that can fly, that is up to you, if it makes you feel better, calmer, loved, more centered and at one with the world, it is not just fantasy.

I get the same thing all the time. I'm Pagan and I don't worship a devil that doesn't exist either. Perhaps the assumption of many people that pagans are all devil-worshippers comes down to simple lack of education. I find it offensive that many other religions want us to be educated about their belief systems, yet they won't stir themselves to learn about any others.

Well this is a touchy subject but to make it plain and simple those people are just ignorant. I have read about witchcraft a long time ago and there are many aspects of it. But in Malay Mythologies all evil worshipers are just categorized as witchcraft in which we call witch Doctors in local Bomoh. The word is the problem here as the word Witch always symbolize evil, hated or feared. Humans are just coward by nature and will only accept what they believe. I am a Muslim but if i were to have a witch or warlock name i will call myself Cyprian. I apologize if i spelled it wrongly. I respect all religion as it makes us unique and if witches have a hard time with this imagine all those people who are into voodoo and Satanist, Vampire and lycan cult are going through. I have a few Satanist friends and they are actually nice people and hard working professional. My advise to all those ignorant people is to judge themselves before they judge others.
Well you take care now my friend.

Alot of people have closed minds and don't want to do actual research on whether it like satanism or not. For some reason they just assume that. I have a pagan friend and he's in no way a devil worshiper. It's the same for psychics too.

It is funny isn't it? We get accused of worshiping something that a different religion created. After they took the image of Pan and decided it would be a great background to create the Devil from.
It is hard sometimes, but I have found that over the years people are growing more understanding- for the most part. With the explosion of the 'New Age' culture out there, more and more people are seeing Paganism in a different light.
Still though, it is hard to overcome centuries of a belief- when you have people for ages tell everyone that witches are evil, it isn't hard to see how the idea has slunk around, even in modern times. Ever turn on a scary movie? Odds are if there is anything dealing with magick in there, there is some evil witch doing it. ~Rolls her eyes~
But at the same time we have a lot more people out about being Pagan and teaching people what it really means. So huzzah for progress!

Because they don't bother to do a little research before jumping into conclusions. Also, not just the Christians, other religions think is wrong because we have to many gods and goddess and to them that is just wrong. To sum it all up everything that doesn't have to do with their religion is considered to be the devil's work....funny we don't even know who Satan is...

I think there are several reasons for this miconception, often it is the result of media misrepresentation or simple ignorance.
There is also the fact that the modern image of the devil (a horned man with goat legs and a pitch fork) is actually derived from the ancient pagan god of fertility; the horns and goat legs are representative of mans relation with his herd and the pitch fork represents farming. this became the image of the devil in the early years of christianty when the roman empire was being converted from the original pagan religion to christianity and those who reufsed to convert were being persecuted for the first time. that word Pagan is derived from the latin paganis meaning country dweller, ie those who lved in the country and stayed pagan.
of course there is also the fact that many symbols of witchcraft such as the pentagram have been alterred or adopted by satanists and they are more likely to be used in this manner in the media than in the peaceful pagan manner they were originally created for. It's kind of like how Hitler stole the swastika from hinduism and now it has negative conotations despite being a symbol of peace.

this stems from the belief of christians that there is no other true religion other than their own. In their minds, no other "God" exists in reality and to worship anything else is to go against that belief and is therefor worshipping the adversary, the "devil" if you will.
It is a flawed argument however because it is based on one's own subjective views, rather than based on basic facts. It is like proving an unproven theory by using another unproven theory, or using a myth as proof of another myth. It is simply not a valid form of debate and truth seeking.

I think those that say that are people that dont know anything about it and are really into their own religion...
I am open minded --granted I wasnt raised on a specific religion myself and I am married to a man that his family is half Jehovah's Witnesses and Half Catholics... talk about a confusing bbq in the summer time!!!
I dont mind --and would read up on anything before I said anything... I am not Pagan or do I practice witchcraft but I believe it exists and I dont believe it is all bad (after all I watched Charmed and the Power of 3 was good--)
I think here at mylot you will find more people that answer your post will be more into it than against it... after all most of us are open minded!!
Happy mylotting.

Everyone? I don't think so. I am not one. I do believe in magic, and I know some who are able to use it to ward off evil spells. Bear in mind some people think what they have already been trained to think. Harry Potter is evil because it praises witches and wizards. But Lord of the Ring is cool although it does the same. So, what do I do? Ignore such people.
